NBN’s Gavin Morris latest high-profile casualty as Nine’s newsroom restructure deepens
NBN News presenter Gavin Morris is the latest high-profile name to be shown the door by Channel 9, as the network’s sweeping cost reduction program continues to claim familiar faces across its television and digital operations.
TV Blackbox understands Morris has entered negotiations over his redundancy agreement, marking the end of a 15-year tenure that made him one of the most respected figures in regional broadcasting.
Gavin Morris joined NBN News in 2009 and quickly became one of the most recognisable presenters in regional television, co-anchoring the nightly 6pm bulletin and serving as a senior weather presenter across Northern New South Wales and the Gold Coast.
Viewers were quick to notice his absence from Monday night’s NBN News bulletin, where he typically co-hosts alongside Natasha Beyersdorf.
The network will not comment publicly on any individual departures occurring this week out of “respect” for the consultation process, but sources confirm Morris is among those affected by ongoing redundancies within Nine’s Broadcasting and Streaming divisions.
His exit comes despite NBN News reinforcing its dominance in the Northern NSW television market earlier this year. In July 2025, the regional broadcaster announced its 33rd consecutive ratings win, recording double-digit audience growth across all key demographics and platforms, including a 62.8 per cent rise in weekday BVOD audiences on 9Now.
Amber Sherlock departs as cost-cutting continues
The news comes at the same time as 9News Sydney weather presenter Amber Sherlock became the latest metropolitan figure to exit amid the company’s $100 million savings drive.
Sherlock, who joined Nine in 2007, was absent from Monday night’s bulletin, with Sophie Walsh filling in for her usual weather segment. While the network has not confirmed her departure, newsroom sources told media outlets that Sherlock has “gone”, amid speculation that her contract will not be renewed.
Cost-cutting takes hold across multiple newsrooms
The full impact of Nine Entertainment’s latest restructure is now being felt across the organisation, with confirmed job losses in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide, as well as within the Wide World of Sports and creative divisions.
The changes follow an internal email distributed on Monday morning by Amanda Laing, Managing Director of Streaming and Broadcast, who told staff the company would undergo
“structural changes across News, Sport, Stan, Marketing and our Creative functions” to “reduce duplication, drive greater collaboration and deliver commercial growth for the Nine Group.”
At the company’s annual general meeting last week, Nine reaffirmed its $100 million cost-out target, part of a broader effort to offset falling advertising revenue and a challenging economic outlook.
Adelaide and Brisbane teams hit by senior exits
In Adelaide, long-time Nine News presenter Kate Collins will not have her contract renewed, just days after she fronted coverage of the city’s annual Christmas Pageant. She was absent from Monday night’s broadcast, with co-presenter Brenton Ragless presenting solo.
According to The Advertiser, Collins was “absolutely blindsided” by the decision, which came as a “huge shock” to newsroom colleagues.
In Brisbane, long-serving sports reporter Jonathan Uptin has also been informed his contract will not be renewed, alongside Supervising Producer of Presentation and Promotion Leon Cull and Operations Co-ordinator Jessica Llewelyn, who have been made redundant.
The Courier-Mail reports morale inside the Brisbane newsroom is “flat and uncertain”, with further job losses anticipated if voluntary redundancies do not meet targets.
It is understood Bronte Gildea, who has been presenting sport in recent bulletins, is expected to replace Uptin.
Melbourne cuts
On Friday, it was confirmed that beloved Melbourne weather presenter Livinia Nixon would exit the Melbourne news bulletin at the end of the month. At the time, her departure was sold as entirely her own decision, though that now appears to have been a marketing message manufactured to allow the industry veteran to exit with dignity.
Sydney newsroom hardest hit
While other states have seen selective cuts, Sydney is understood to have borne the brunt of the restructuring process. The Wide World of Sports division has also faced reductions as Nine continues to manage the costs associated with its Olympic Games coverage and ongoing NRL broadcast rights negotiations.
By contrast, the Today Show teams have so far avoided significant structural change.
In a message to staff on Monday morning, News Director Michael Best said consultation meetings were under way with affected employees and would be completed “as soon as possible” to provide clarity.
“I understand this is a time of uncertainty and I want to assure you that my priority is to support everyone through this process,”
A company-wide overhaul
Nine confirmed to TV Blackbox that the restructure is part of a wider transformation bringing together teams across Stan, Channel 9 and 9Now under a single operating model.
“The new operating model formally brings together teams across Stan, Channel 9 and 9Now,” a spokesperson said.
“It is designed to reduce duplication, drive greater collaboration and deliver commercial growth for Nine, while working to offset the challenging external advertising market.”
“Our primary focus during the consultation is supporting these team members through access to our employee wellbeing provider, as well as exploring redeployment opportunities within the broader Nine Group.”
Industry pressures mount
Nine Entertainment Co. employs around 2,900 staff across its broadcast and streaming operations. Earlier this year, the company merged its free-to-air, digital and streaming arms under a single executive structure, effectively ending Stan’s role as a standalone business.
In its most recent trading update, Nine reported that Total TV revenue for September and October was “down mid to high single digits” year-on-year.
Despite the turbulence, Nine executives have emphasised that the structural changes are intended to ensure the business remains “fit for the future”.
Leave Gavin Morris alone. He is one of the most respected people on the Nine network.
Get rid of the dregs like Stefanovic and Scott Cam but leave the decent people on our news.

NBN News was once a respected and professional program but Nine has stripped it of all its popular and experienced staff and replaced them with reporters barely out of school who struggle to string a sentence together and have primary school level ability to read aloud.
Paul Lobb should never have been axed – there are others there who should’ve gone well before him, and now the same for Gavin Morris – okay as a newsreader and great as a weatherman.

Gavin Morris would have to be the best weather reporter in the entire industry. You could rely on the content of his report which he presented in a way that it was easy to understand how the weather was formed. The other channels weather is hopeless.

Spot on gentlemen, we’re losing a champion. While I don’t surf anymore (I have knees that make it a long way to the shop if I want a sausage roll) I love listening to and watching the images about the surf as I’m sure even most non surfers do. To this end Gav in our house is known as “Wax Head Gav”, a name we gave to him affectionally for his love of what he does. And apart from this he is a dead set, walk up start brilliant host and presenter, knowledgeable and professional, and buggers me why we dump someone this masterful. Fair dinkum NBN 9, it’s moments like this that help erase common sense.

People talking about other news readers like he has control over who went first really kids? they are all good which is why they had their jobs. He is a good all rounder and actually knew what he was talking about he wasn’t just reading words. It’s just a shame there isn’t a focus on local funding. It’s all about the money, not the people, not the community. They the newsreaders don’t make that decision it’s people behind the scenes. The world is a pretty tough place right now – a lot of people have lost work or businesses especially since the lockdowns. I hope he and his family have support right now and he gets a decent pay out to give them a breather over the Christmas period and beyond. It’s such a tough time of year for many.
To have made a career out of something you are passionate about isn’t as common these days- he’s lived that dream – and I am sure it will continue I just hope it’s not too disruptive for him and his family.

Ron Johnson he was our weatherman on NBN 3 back in 60s and 70s maybe 80s too.
Ron Johnson Gav’s mentor was Des Hart. Des was the weather forecaster for the RAAF Williamtown, and did the weather on NBN 3 using boards. He did publish a book. Gav is a local boy , I first seen many years ago on The Weather Channel on Foxtel. I knew his face straight away as he lived not far from me at Woodberry. After Des Hart Gav has been the best Weatherman we could have since Des.,. He knows the area, well and with doing his flying up in the Hunter Valley and many other places, he learnt about the changing conditions. Gav will be sorely missed by the local guys who rely on his predictions. Gav was the only weather forecaster to get the predictions right when the Pasha Bulker storm hit.

Disgraceful. Gavin was a great newsreader and weather presenter. It will be a great loss. He is the best and NBN news won’t be the same. You can’t beat experience at the desk. He was there when the cyclones and floods hit, with awesome commentary, he has always done a fantastic job. What is wrong with Nine getting rid of the best. Maybe the decision makers should leave, clearly they are getting rid of the wrong people.

Newcastle have lost a great broadcaster & news reader … enjoyed listening to his weather forecast.. What will they do for Christmas in Sydney , Gav would go & do their replacement for the other readers on holiday & did a great job …. 😢😞🙁💙💙

A common cry out in our house is ” GAV’S ON ” and we gather around the TV to watch his weather report as he really knows his stuff !!
The other’s are lovely but they don’t do the weather any where near as detailed as Gav.. .we rely on his reports.

Poppy Rara if there was rough weather looming in Gavin’s report you could see by his body language that he would get quite excited which added to his professional and knowledgeable presentation. He put his heart and soul into it and will be sadly missed.His demise brought about by some stuffed shirt in Sydney with no idea of just how good the people in their news team are. SBS offer good coverage as does Chanel 6

I stopped watching the Today show because of Karl, I have been watching Sunrise for years, but I always watched NBN news, looks like it will be 7 news from now on, should have kept Paul Lobb.

The issue is that Gavin Morris only ever worked part-time. He’s takes lots of time off, or he’s not rostered on. He probably only appears about 25% of a year.

They could save $4 million in one go by getting rid of Stefanovic from Today and Cam from the Block. They are both crap presenters and would easily be replaced. Especially Stefanovic when Today’s ratings are so far behind sunrise mainly due to him because he thinks he’s a comedian. Disgraceful nine network decision.

Well, THAT was a dumb decision. Gavin Morris was, for a lot of people, the only reason not to watch 7 News. Clearly Channel 9 prefers tall, skinny chicky babes who wave vaguely at the weather maps with floppy-looking, languid hands and seem to know about 1% of what Gavin knows … if they’re lucky!

Very disappointed of Sydney’s distain of NBN News who do a brilliant job pushing out three versions of the news for their viewing area from the Central Coast to the Gold Coast. Gavin is a terrific on camera talent. I hope he moves to other regional areas WIN or Seven. Good people are hard to replace.

The biggest mistake Nine made after years of allowing profitable and largely autonomous management was thinking they knew how to best manage the station and not renewing Paul Lobb. Still the benchmark for quality diction, delivery & presentation.
Plus the many off air staff made redundant at the same time.
