Tonight, ABC‘s Australian Story presents Sky’s the Limit, telling the story of how friendship, welcome and practical support helped one family begin a new life in Australia.
The episode follows Naima Ali Farah and her son Feisal Abdi Sugal, whose arrival in Melbourne from Somalia became the beginning of an unexpected and lasting connection.
When Naima Ali Farah and Feisal Abdi Sugal arrived in Melbourne last June, they were prepared to face the challenge of starting over largely by themselves.
Instead, they were greeted at Melbourne Airport by a group of Australian Jewish friends who had committed to helping them settle into their new lives.
What began as practical assistance soon developed into something far more personal.
Over the following year, the group built a close relationship with Naima and Feisal, sharing meals, celebrating religious occasions and learning about each other’s experiences. Their connection extended well beyond helping the family settle into Australia.
The episode also explores the Community Refugee Integration Sponsorship Program, a Federal Government initiative that links everyday Australians with refugees beginning a new chapter in their lives.
Through the program, the volunteers became guides, advocates and friends, while Naima and Feisal found a broader support network during a significant period of change.
At the centre of the story is the idea that meaningful connections can develop across religious and cultural differences when people are prepared to listen, share experiences and support one another.
One big family, is how Naima describes the group.
They helped fill a space in my heart that had been empty, says Feisal.
As with many editions of Australian Story, Sky’s the Limit uses one family’s experience to explore broader themes of welcome, trust and friendship.
