Convicted serial killer Ivan Milat is back under the spotlight on tonight’s 60 Minutes, as Dimity Clancey investigates whether his crimes extended beyond the seven backpacker murders for which he was convicted.

The special report follows a New South Wales parliamentary inquiry already uncovering fresh information as it seeks to establish the full extent of Milat’s alleged crimes and provide answers for families.

It’s not in dispute that Ivan Milat was an evil, violent criminal. In fact, he was one of Australia’s worst serial killers. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he murdered seven young backpackers in the Belanglo State Forest, south of Sydney.

What has long been suspected, even if not proven, is that Milat’s killing spree began years earlier, and that he was responsible for many homicides that are still unsolved. Milat died in 2019, but a New South Wales parliamentary inquiry has now been set up to try to establish the true extent of his depravity.

Its aim is to uncover information that might not only assist police, but also the families of possible Milat victims. As Dimity Clancey reports, quite remarkably it has already made some stunning progress.

Reported by Dimity Clancey and produced by Anne Worthington.

This episode of 60 Minutes airs tonight, Sunday 12th July, at 8:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
