Network 10 has switched 10 Comedy to High Definition, expanding its HD offerings as free-to-air networks accelerate the MPEG4 transition.
Australian free-to-air viewers will notice changes to their channel line-ups this week following an upgrade by Network 10, which has shifted its 10 Comedy multichannel to MPEG4 High Definition in all metropolitan markets.
The upgrade means 10, 10 Drama and 10 Comedy are now all available in HD, while the Nickelodeon channel continues to be broadcast in standard definition.
The move is part of an industry-wide transition to MPEG4 broadcasting. The Seven Network is also in the process of upgrading its services, with 7TWO now available in HD across most of the country. Sydney and Melbourne remain the only metropolitan areas still receiving the channel in standard definition. Nine completed a similar change for 9Go last year, while the ABC moved ABC NEWS Channel and ABC Entertains to HD in July.
For most viewers, the changes should appear automatically. If new channel settings are not visible, TVs may need to be re-tuned through the settings menu. Viewers who are unsure of the process are advised to consult their TV manual or contact the manufacturer.
Compatibility with MPEG4 can be an issue for older equipment. Devices purchased before 2009 may not support the format, with certain models — including Schaub Lorenz, Baumann Meyer, NEC and Sherwood televisions, along with Next Wave personal video recorders — previously identified as incompatible.
According to industry advice, a TV that does not support MPEG4 may still list the channel but will display only a black screen, with sound either absent or inconsistent.
Audiences unable to access MPEG4 broadcasts can continue to watch programs from Network 10 through the streaming platform 10.com.au or the 10 app on compatible devices.
Meanwhile Nickelodeon still looks like a dial up connection from 06
Agreed. Some of those Nick@Nite movies look like they are coming off VHS tapes.
How about 10 comedy do something about it’s monotonous programming..rpt after rpt after rpt of Friends, Frasier and the big bang theory are wearing very thin and that doesn’t mean replacing them with mash or the brady bunch.
WOULDN’T YOU THINK THAT …. “Neighbours” WOULD Move from 10 Comedy to Channel 10 Drama ?
Whoever thought of the name 10 Comedy has clearly never actually watched the channel. They have cooking shows, Neighbours, repeats of Bold and the Beautiful and home shopping with the word Comedy still at the bottom of the screen. If you are going to call it a comedy channel at least have mostly comedy shows or rename the channel to fit the programming. At least Nine have the right idea with Go and Gem having names that covers all types of shows.
The new name from 11 to Peach and now Comedy was intended to provide a clearer scope for the channel’s programming; Network 10’s chief content officer Beverley McGarvey described “Peach” as feeling “relaxed” and “almost a guilty pleasure” to viewers, with programmers such as Neighbours, Supernatural, This Is Us, and Will & Grace, and continuing to skew towards younger demographics
