Fans of soapie drama and Kiwis living in Australia can breathe easy, the doors of Ferndale’s most dramatic hospital aren’t closing anytime soon.

New Zealand soap Shortland Street has been officially renewed through 2026, with production secured thanks to ongoing support from NZ On Air and new eligibility for the Screen Production Rebate following changes to eligibility criteria last year.

As reported by Stuff, NZ On Air has allocated nearly NZ$11 million to keep the show on air, ensuring it remains a fixture on screens for at least another year.

TVNZ chief executive Jodi O’Donnell said:

“We’re extremely grateful for NZ On Air’s support in helping us keep this taonga (treasured possession in Māori) on screen.”

“Our audiences love Shorty and NZ On Air’s funding ensures we can continue to bring this iconic drama to viewers in 2026 while we work through its digital transition.”

South Pacific Pictures chief executive Kelly Martin added:

“Shortland Street continues to entertain NZ audiences with its diverse and relatable stories, and it continues to play a crucial role in the NZ production sector, providing consistent employment and fostering local talent.”

“We are incredibly thankful to both TVNZ and NZ On Air for their support.”

That said, the show’s future has looked a little shaky in recent years. TVNZ announced it would reduce Shortland Street episodes to three per week in 2024 amid cost-cutting measures and ongoing concerns about long-term funding.

The long-running series has been a staple across the ditch and continues to attract Australian viewers through 7plus, where it has been streaming for free since 2023, following the broadcaster’s acquisition of the series.

First launched in 1992, Shortland Street remains one of New Zealand’s most iconic TV exports, with its enduring appeal set to continue — at least for now.

New episodes of Shortland Street are available to stream for free on 7plus, with older episodes accessible to Australian audiences on YouTube.
