Optus Sport has bid an emotional farewell to subscribers, ushering in a new era for football streaming in Australia.

Optus Sport has ended its service as of 1 August 2025, closing the chapter on nearly a decade of football broadcasting in Australia. The shutdown follows the transfer of key football rights—including the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, J.League, and National Women’s Soccer League—to Stan Sport, marking a significant reshuffle in the country’s sports streaming market.

To mark its departure, Optus Sport released a farewell video to subscribers, offering thanks for their loyalty and support. The video reflected on the platform’s contributions to the growth of football in Australia and acknowledged the shared moments between fans, staff and partners.

Key Points

  • Optus Sport has ceased operations, with football coverage now available through Stan Sport.
  • The platform marked its closure by sharing an emotional thank-you video with subscribers.
  • Optus is working with Stan to help customers transition and continue following major football competitions.

The closure brings an end to Optus Sport’s role as a hub for international football since its 2016 launch.

From today, all coverage of the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, J.League and NWSL will be available exclusively via Stan Sport. The move reunites both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League on a single streaming platform for Australian fans.

In a recent statement, Optus CEO Stephen Rue said:

“One of our key priorities was to find a home for Optus Sport content which would take the game forward and enable all Optus Sport subscribers to continue to receive uninterrupted access to all their favourite football action.

Optus Sport customers and the game of football will be in great hands at Stan, and we know the game will receive the broadcasting priority it deserves from an organisation whose speciality is delivering quality sports programming to its customers.”

Optus cited its decision to focus on its core telecommunications operations as a key factor behind the closure. The farewell video, shared on the final day of service, closed with a message to fans:

“We have enjoyed every moment producing world-class content for football fans in Australia and around the globe and though it’s the end of an unforgettable era here at Optus Sport we are excited for the future of football in Australia.

We would like to deeply thank our team, customers, fans, followers and partners for supporting us at every step and sharing so many moments together, on and off the pitch.”

Subscribers are being advised to set up their Stan Sport account using the same email address as their Optus Sport login to ensure continuity of access. Optus has communicated that billing for existing Optus Sport customers will cease automatically, with annual subscribers set to receive prorated refunds and prepaid customers offered discounts on Stan Sport packages.

According to information provided by Optus, eligible former subscribers will also receive access to Stan’s premium content until January 2026, after which discounted rates for football coverage will continue for three seasons. The company said it has sent detailed guidance to customers to support a seamless transition, and support services are available for any queries regarding account details, refunds or access codes.

  1. it’ll be interesting when the EFL Rights for Australia come up whether Stan will go for them as well along with the SPL

  2. Is this article anything but a commercial for Optus and Stan? Where’s the maths – or any form of consumer value commentary?
Optus Sport consumers are now faced with minimum additional monthly subscription costs of $12 (Stan basic) +$9.99 (can’t work out if this is to Stan or Optus) whilst compensation on your monthly Optus bill is $4.99/mo … making it an extra $204/yr to maintain similar sports options. And the transfer / eligibility / sign-up process is predictably painful and disjointed between the platforms if u ever held prior Stan account … still waiting for the supposed seamless transfer to magically happen … with less than 12 hours to kick off.
