Apple TV+ has revealed details about its upcoming series “Sunny,” which will captivate audiences with a blend of mystery and dark comedy. The ten-episode thriller is scheduled to launch with its first two episodes on Wednesday, 10 July, continuing with weekly releases until 4 September.

“Sunny” is the brainchild of Katie Robbins, known for her work on “The Affair” and “The Last Tycoon.” Robbins not only created the series but also takes the helm as showrunner. The series features an impressive cast led by Rashida Jones, an Emmy-nominated actress recognized for her roles in “On the Rocks” and “The Other Black Girl.” Jones plays Suzie, an American residing in Kyoto, Japan, whose tranquil life is shattered following the mysterious disappearance of her husband and son in a plane crash.

In a unique twist, Suzie’s late husband’s company offers her a domestic robot named Sunny as a form of consolation. Initially resistant, Suzie eventually forms a bond with Sunny, and together they delve into a perilous investigation of her family’s disappearance.

Joining Jones is a diverse ensemble including Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, YOU, annie the clumsy, and Jun Kunimura.

The show is a product of a partnership between Apple, A24, and Jones, marking their second project together after “On the Rocks.” Additionally, Jones starred in another recent Apple success, “Silo,” a series adapted from Hugh Howey’s acclaimed novels.

“Sunny” is produced by A24 and Robbins’ Babka Pictures, with both serving as executive producers. The narrative is inspired by the book “Dark Manual” by Colin O’Sullivan, an award-winning Irish author based in Japan.

Sunny premieres on Apple TV+ from 10 July, 2024.
