Australian actress Phoebe Tonkin is set to immerse herself in the intriguing world of crime drama as both the lead star and executive producer of The Dark Lake. This series, a collaborative effort with Brouhaha Entertainment, draws its inspiration from Sarah Bailey’s award-winning debut novel.
Tonkin, celebrated for her role in Netflix’s Boy Swallows Universe, was chosen for her ability to embody Gemma’s intricate character. Troy Lum, a producer at Brouhaha, praised her for the depth she brings to her roles, highlighting her portrayal in Boy Swallows Universe as a pivotal reason for her casting.
The Dark Lake offers a gripping narrative centered around Gemma Woodstock, a detective grappling with her troubled past while investigating the murder of a former high school adversary in her closely knit hometown. The storyline delves into the moral complexities of law enforcement as Gemma seeks redemption for her questionable past decisions.
Bailey’s novel, which clinched the 2018 Davitt Award for Best Crime Debut and the 2018 Ned Kelly Award for Best First Crime, is the first of a trilogy that explores various locales, including Melbourne and a small coastal community.
