Stan has confirmed that production for its new original series, Thou Shalt Not Steal, is underway in Alice Springs.
The eight-episode drama transports viewers to the 1980s and spans locations across Central and South Australia.
Sherry-Lee Watson and Will McDonald, both of whom have previously appeared in “Heartbreak High,” take leading roles. They are joined by seasoned actors Miranda Otto, known for “The Clearing” and “Talk To Me,” and Noah Taylor, famed for his roles in “Peaky Blinders” and “Game of Thrones.”
The series explores the life of Robyn, played by Watson, a young Aboriginal girl delving into a mysterious family secret. McDonald portrays Gidge, an awkward teenager who becomes her unlikely ally. Pursuing them are characters Maxine, enacted by Otto, a sex trafficker, and Robert, played by Taylor, a duplicitous preacher.
The direction of the series falls under Dylan River, an AACTA Award-winning filmmaker. River also co-created the show with Tanith Glynn-Maloney, another AACTA Award recipient. Glynn-Maloney’s prior works include “Finding Jedda” and “She Who Must Be Loved.”
“My family always said, be careful what you write, you might have to make it one day! I’m so thrilled with the team we have assembled for Thou Shall Not Steal and can’t wait for audiences to join our cast of characters for a good old fashioned road trip from the NT to SA,”
said director and co-creator Dylan River.
Supporting roles are filled by a rich ensemble cast featuring Natasha Wanganeen, Warren H Williams, William McKenna, Darren Gilshenan, Shari Sebbens, Fiona O’Loughlin, Damian Walshe-Howling, Geoff Morrell, Justin Rosniak, Andy Golledge, Eddie Baroo, and Fletcher Humphreys, among others.
Producing duties for the series are handled by Ludo Studio, the Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning company led by Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson. They’re joined by producer Sam Moor of Since1778 Productions. Executive producers for Stan are Cailah Scobie and Donna Chang.
Major production backing for the series comes from Screen Australia, with additional support provided by the South Australian Film Corporation, Screen Territory, and Screen Queensland’s Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Incentive. International distribution will be managed by DCD Rights.
“Thou Shalt Not Steal” adds another feather to Stan’s cap as it continues to expand its portfolio of exclusive Australian productions. With a compelling narrative and an impressive cast, this original series is set to be another triumph for the streaming platform.
