In anticipation of this year’s AFL Grand Final, Channel 9 is understood to producing a one-off special to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Footy Show Grand Final Spectacular.
The Herald Sun reports the program is expected to air as a nostalgic look-back at the annual event, which became an integral part of Australia’s sporting culture.
The first Footy Show Grand Final Special aired in a Friday timeslot in 1993 as an extension of the Sunday Footy Show, and was hosted by Max Walker.
It featured well-known personalities such as Ted Whitten, Sam Newman, Sam Kekovich, Simon Maddern, and Lou Richards.
This forthcoming special is slated to showcase iconic moments from previous Grand Final specials, including highlights from the ‘players revue’—a segment where football stars performed dance routines and mimed songs. Production is already underway, and many favourite faces from past years are expected to contribute their memories to the programme.
Sam Newman, a veteran host of the Footy Show, confirmed that he has been approached to participate.
Channel 9 is also understood to be planning a separate special next year, to mark the 30th anniversary of the prime-time Footy Show. This is expected to follow a similar format, featuring a compilation of the best moments from the show’s extensive history.
