Women’s sport rightly shines under the spotlight while THE BLOCK stands up and delivers its consistently strong audience in return.
Channel 7
In what has been a programming masterstroke (thanks to a super competitive Matildas) Seven rounded out the tournament with incredible numbers for the final…especially considering there was no Aussie team involved. The three main segments played out thus:
FIFA Women’s World Cup FINAL: Pre-Game (780,000)
FIFA Women’s World Cup FINAL: ESP v ENG (2,000,000)
FIFA Women’s World Cup FINAL: Post-Game (1,397,000)
Huge numbers to finish out a very successful pick-up for the network. The late evening closed out with a repeat of RFDS (143,000) holding fast to a smaller segment of the night’s audience.
Seven first in both primary (45.5%) and network (51.7%) rankings.
Channel 9
The Block (778,000) does very well for its first proper room reveal of the season on Nine though obviously couldn’t compete with the the big game. 60 Minutes (360,000) certainly suffered afterwards, though likely will see a pick-up in Total TV over the next week. A repeat of Australian Crime Stories (198,000) and Killer At The Crime Scene (83,000) held some viewers into the late night.
Nine second in both primary (18.5%) and network (24.1%) rankings.
ABC
Restoration Australia (337,000) led for the ABC as its best, with Bay of Fires (245,000) slipping on its usual average though staying strong in Total TV numbers. The Beast Must Die (77,000) almost vanished as repeats of The Newsreader (37,000) and Talking Heads (DNR) completed the quieter night.
ABC third in both primary (7.3%) and network (10%) rankings.
Channel 10
10’s option to program away from the WWC final proved to be right as the audiences also went away. The Sunday Project (189,000 6:30pm; 212,000 7pm) down; a repeat of The Dog House Australia (161,000) half what The Traitors Australia had been getting, and US dramas FBI (92,000) and a repeat of NCIS: Hawaii (73,000) kept only a small audience to the end.
10 fourth in both primary (4.9%) and network (8.7%) rankings.
SBS
SBS hit the hardest by the WWC final as its audience largely flips over to watch it. Colosseum (64,000 (double ep average as coded)) and Amazon: The Lost World (41,000) filled the void otherwise.
SBS fifth in both primary (2.2%) and network (5.5%) rankings.
