To paraphrase that great man of peace Mahatma Gandhi, history always shows that the way of truth and love conquers evil.
His words are worth reflecting on as Australia begins commemorating 20 years since the Bali bombings.
In October 2002, terrorists, deliberately targeting westerners, blew up two packed nightclubs in the tourist district of Kuta. It was a horror that killed 202 innocent people, including 88 Australians. Hundreds more were seriously injured.
In a very special story for 60 MINUTES, Peter Overton, who has reported on the Bali tragedy since it happened, pays tribute to the survivors, their rescuers and the people who lost their lives.
As he points out, the murderers might have caused mayhem that awful night, but they didn’t come close to claiming any sort of victory. And that’s because they ignored a simple fact: their cowardly act was no match for their victims’ courage.

THE FIRST LADY
She might not be as well-known as Volodymyr Zelensky, but make no mistake, Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, is just as heroic as her presidential husband.
And she’s fighting just as hard to kick the Russian invaders out of her country. But this week her job became even more difficult when Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced he was mobilising an extra 300,000 army reservists to fight in the war.
He also repeated his warning that he is prepared to use nuclear weapons, a threat condemned around the world.
In an exclusive interview with Sarah Abo, Olena Zelenska urges countries like Australia to continue supporting Ukraine’s war effort, saying her nation’s very survival depends on it.
