The former TV presenter has told Rob McKnight of how he is getting by since his days as a staple figure on Australian television.
Australian television host Peter Everett would be most recognised for hosting Ready Steady Cook, but the days in the sun have since set.
Filling in as host for the Afternoons show on 4BC, Rob McKnight discussed the impact of Covid-19 on the entertainment industry with Peter, where the presenter revealed he has been forced to sell some of his possessions just to get by.
He said:
“I’m not far from the welfare Rob!
“There’s been a lot of sales on my behalf. I’m selling anything…
“I’m not down to the garage sale yet, but I have been selling off a lot of things.
“It really hasn’t been an easy time Rob, it hasn’t. In the entertainment industry, a lot of my friends are far less fortunate than I and have had it really, really bad.
“But, anyway, good to see things are turning around. Theatre is back, and many of them are employed again, so keep supporting the Australian arts everybody.”
Questioned further by Rob, Peter said he was very open about the fact he needed to sell his belongings, admitting, “you gotta survive somehow”.
Peter said:
“Funnily enough, during Covid time, sales were big, auctions were huge.
“People were spending their money somewhere, on arts or whatever it may be.
“It turned out that it was a good time to sell, so it kept me going, I can tell you. So thank you everybody for buying.”
Peter also discussed his most famed role, hosting Ready Steady Cook, which he did so from 2006 to 2011.
“I loved it! And the chefs! From George Calombaris to Manu Feildel, you know great guys, and Janelle Bloom, all of them.
“Wonderful people, Damian Heads from Brisbane, wonderful.”
Despite hosting the popular program for five years, Peter was fired from Channel 10 and replaced by comedian Colin Lane.
The show struggled to survive after his departure however, ultimately ending in 2013.
About the show being axed, Peter said over a million people had complained to the network over the decision, puzzling him as to why it was cancelled.
After his fame on Ready Steady Cook, Peter also competed on the celebrity Reality TV series, The Celebrity Apprentice, where the program put Peter in “horrendous pressure”.
He said:
“My last shingles attack was on [The Celebrity Apprentice]. And that was horrendous.
“They test you beyond. You know, it’s real what you see, they’re pretty horrific. It’s behind the scenes which is worse, that’s what [producers] should show.”

Why not bring back Ready Steady Cook Australia and have Peter Everett as host. He’s quite charismatic. It’s also a good show and apparently it’s still going in the UK and is quite popular.
