MOST POPULAR CHILDREN’S SHOW FINALISTS

ITCH (ABC)

Premiering in 2020, Itch has released two ten-part action-adventure seasons based on the books written by Simon Mayo.

The show follows Itchingham Lofte, a lover of science who obtains a rock which he believes is a new element and has strange properties. The powerful GreenCorp are chasing after the strange new rock, putting Itch and his family into a breathless adventure with terrifyingly high stakes.

Itch has seen much success internationally, broadcast in New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, Finland and Catalonia.

An award at the TV Boxies would be the first for the series.

BLUEY (ABC)

This animated series has captured the world, with Bluey commissioning 156 episodes over three seasons since 2018.

The show follows Bluey, a six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy who is characterised by her abundance of energy, imagination and curiosity of the world. The young dog lives with her father, Bandit; mother, Chilli; and younger sister, Bingo, who regularly joins Bluey on her adventures.

About the show, Jane Gould, senior vice-president of Disney Channels Worldwide said, “Bluey reminds us all of our own families, and it plays out the small but emotionally epic dramas of day-to-day life in surprising, heartfelt and very funny ways that will engage children and parents alike”.

Winning over 15 awards allotted in its short time on TV, Bluey may make TV Blackbox history by winning in the Children’s Show category.

BTN (ABC)

BTN, or Behind the News, has been a long-running news programme broadcast for school-aged children.

The show explores news using the current language, music and popular culture of youths. It also explains the basic concepts that underpin the issues and events, while also providing background information.

The very first episode aired in 1968 under the name Current Affairs, but soon became what it is known as today, presented by Amelia Mosley on ABC Me.

With such a long-running show in the mix against other homegrown favourites of recent days, BTN could be an outside pick to take home the Children’s gold.

KANGAROO BEACH (ABC)

Another Australian animated series, Kangaroo Beach is a new show that debuted this year, targeted at preschool children.

Four junior lifeguards, kangaroo Pounce, koala Frizzy, wombat Neville and platypus Gemma are on their way to becoming heroes of Kangaroo Beach, under the guidance of grown-up lifeguards Bondi, Sandy and Big Trev. Each episode has an important water safety message as well.

Starring as the grown-up lifeguards are Kitty Flanagan, Matt Hardie and Rupert Degas.

With 26 episodes under season one’s belt, this new series might be a big competitor in this TV Boxies category.

TOTALLY WILD (10 Shake)

Born in the 1990s, 10’s children show staple, Totally Wild finally closed its doors in 2021.

After 27 seasons the series and original presenter Stacey Thomson ‘Ranger Stacey’ said goodbye in June.

As a current affairs program, Totally Wild covered topics such as Australia’s native flora and fauna, action sports, the environment, science, and technology.

At the time of cancellation, TV Blackbox was told, “Network 10 remains committed to creating and producing local children’s content, but its strategy has evolved to include the development and production of more children’s drama programs”.

A win at the TV Boxies would be one of the show’s last opportunities to take home an award.
