Miss Phryne Fisher will grace our television screens once again with ABC TV announcing that it has greenlit the highly-anticipated third series of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

The news comes despite speculation last month the ABC might axe the series due to budget cuts.

Gold Logie nominated actress Essie Davis returns in the lead role of our stunning and thoroughly modern lady sleuth of the 1920’s. Independent, glamorous and unflappable, Miss Phryne Fisher will continue to fight against injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit.

Filming begins in Melbourne in mid October.

Head of ABC TV Fiction, Carole Sklan, says, “The ABC is very happy to support a 3rd series of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.  Essie Davis is captivating in the role of the fabulous, irreverent lady detective.  The beautifully filmed series has inspired a devoted following with its charm, wit, ingenious stories and resonant social themes.”

Producers Fiona Eagger and Deb Cox are thrilled to be making a third series.  “We are elated to be bringing more Miss Fisher to our loyal fans – both within Australia and from around the world. They have provided us with so much passionate support it seems only fitting to reward them with more episodes of Essie’s virtuoso performance as our daring, cheeky and impeccably-dressed heroine, Phryne Fisher.”

Based on the best-selling Phryne Fisher novels by one of Australia’s favourite crime authors Kerry Greenwood, the television series has been hugely popular internationally as well as in Australia, selling to more than 120 overseas territories, including USA, Canada, France, the UK and Asia and Latin America.

On ABC1 the first series was an immediate success, garnering an average of 1.4 million viewers per episode (5-City Metro + Regional).

In 2013, Series 2 maintained its popularity, with an average of 1.5 million viewers per episode, 14% of which was time-shifted viewing.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Christmas Special delivered an audience of 1.6m viewers and was the 6th most watched program on ABC1 in 2013.
