After years of speculation, the next chapter of Wentworth is officially locked in, with the long rumoured spin off confirmed at the AACTA Awards on Friday night.

The announcement marks the return of one of Australia’s most successful and widely exported dramas, shifting the story beyond the prison walls while drawing on familiar characters and forging its own narrative.

The news was revealed during a Spotlight Moment at the ceremony, presented by Danielle Cormack, who played Bea Smith and confirmed a new series set in the Wentworth universe is on the way to BINGE and Foxtel.

Addressing the room, Cormack described Wentworth as one of Foxtel’s most successful dramas, before confirming the franchise would continue with a new chapter focused on life after prison, parole, survival and the hope of renewal.

She also joked that while much loved characters will return, her own is very much done, quipping that she was “relentlessly shanked 16 times by a prison shiv”, drawing laughs from the audience and playfully downplaying any on screen comeback.

BINGE has now formally commissioned Wentworth: The Next Chapter, continuing the legacy of the Fremantle produced series which ran for eight seasons from 2013 to 2021 and became a global phenomenon, screening in more than 170 territories worldwide.

Speaking on the commission, Lana Greenhalgh, Director of Scripted Originals at Foxtel Group, said the creative team was eager to honour the show’s legacy while pushing the story forward.

“We’re incredibly proud of the legacy of Wentworth and excited to reveal what we’re creating in this bold new chapter.”

With Wentworth permanently shut down in the series finale, the spin-off will explore the unpredictable reality of life on parole, with themes of survival, resilience and second chances at its core.

The confirmation follows months of fan speculation after Katrina Milosevic hinted at a potential spin-off during a Wentworth Con event in late 2024, joking that fans might one day see Boomer’s story continue.

Wentworth itself was a modern reimagining of Network 10’s Prisoner, the landmark drama that ran from 1979 to 1986 and helped shape Australian television, and now looks set to enter a new era.

Wentworth: The Next Chapter will stream on BINGE and Foxtel, with further details to be announced.

    • Robert Moden Have you watched the original Prisoner Cell Block H? I think you can binge it on YouTube.

      • Debra Ramos-Boyas yes ma’am, I watched it on YouTube and that led me to Wentworth. It was neat to see the difference between the different characters between the two shows. Prisoner of Cell Block H was really ground breaking in the day touching on quite a few subjects.

    • Robert Moden me too I lost count how many times I’ve watched I’m a school cleaner and in Australia we’ve just had our Christmas holidays and I binged watched again

  1. I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ how this will fair as they finished that particular storyline and to be totally honest the last couple of seasons weren’t great but I’d give it a go just to see

  2. Let’s goooo gotta see Rita and ruby and boomers ending and lue Kelly gotta seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and Ferguson

  3. I wish they’d rewind it all the way back to before Bea was killed making her death a someones nightmare but not real 🤷🏾🤷🏾 I’m sorry for me after her death it wasn’t the same smh 🥺🥺

  4. Please 🙏 be true.

    • Tanya Rogerson I seen this I meant to send you earlier. Wonder if it’ll be actually like wentworth

      • I think it’s to be a spin off like showing them all out of prison, or what they are upto now. Better be good though

  6. Melissa Roper I always think of you when I hear about Wentworth. Thought you might like this! ❤️

  7. If its true that it wont be set in the prison, and we dont see any teal prison attire and prison cells, then it may as well just be called a spin off from neighbours or home and away. It wont be Wentworth, without Wentworth.

  8. In the background have the demented board member reviving all the dead prisoners bodies she’s collected in her laboratory.

  9. I’m hyperventilating, I was addicted to Wentworth for all of its 8 👏👏👏seasons – excellent news!!!

    • Megan Andersen i seen a video on tiktok about it actually illegal was doing something so didn’t see it all but it’s outside of the prison this time I think they said

  10. I strongly believe Channel 10 should do the right thing and honour its original, groundbreaking television drama Prisoner by acquiring the broadcast rights to all eight seasons of Wentworth and airing it as part of its drama slate. This would not only preserve and celebrate the Prisoner/Wentworth legacy and Channel 10’s historic connection to it, but would also be a smart, strategic move to drive audience engagement and ratings.
