Channel 7 has locked in Sydney as the next stop for its nationwide HD broadcast rollout.
Seven has confirmed the next stage of its national broadcast technology upgrade, with Sydney set to transition to High Definition (HD) using MPEG4 from 7 October 2025.
The move follows recent changes in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, with Melbourne now the final metropolitan market yet to make the switch. Seven has indicated it will announce a date for that upgrade in due course.
Under the changes, Channel 7, Channel 70 and Channel 71 will be broadcast in HD using MPEG4, while 7two will also move to MPEG4 HD. Other channels including 7mate, 7Flix, 7Bravo and Racing.com already operate in MPEG4 and will remain unaffected.
The transition involves the removal of MPEG2 technology in favour of MPEG4, which Seven says enables it to improve service quality and align with growing viewer expectations.
For most households, the updated channels should appear automatically. If not, viewers are advised to perform a channel re-scan through their television’s settings menu. Seven recommends consulting a TV manual or contacting the manufacturer if assistance is required.
MPEG4 compatibility is standard on televisions, set-top boxes and personal video recorders purchased from 2009 onwards, particularly those carrying the Freeview logo. Devices bought prior to that year may not support the format. In such cases, channels may appear in the listings but display only a black screen, with or without sound.
For viewers with older equipment, Seven programs remain accessible via the broadcaster’s streaming platform at 7plus.com.au or through the 7plus mobile and TV applications.
Its time for all the networks to switch their primary channel to HD. ie 9 being 9HD and 10 being 10HD.
Jonathon Clark I thought 9 and 10 already had?
Chris Thuell not in SA
Jonathon Clark you have TV there? 🤣
But your Tv still has to be HD Compatible: Or you need to Purchase a HD Set Top Box.
Your Old SD Set Top Box that you bought Cheap, when Digital Tv began, is Now Useless‼️
Let’s go 4K instead. If 4K is offered on a streaming platform ie 7+ I’ll happily ditch FTA.
Now they just need to fix their reception issues 🤣.
Very pixelated for most people I know and every other channel works perfectly ( different aerials etc too!)
Long overdue but a welcome upgrade for 7two, especially given how bad 7plus quality is. Surprised that promo is even in 720p50.
But why do they bother keeping the Ch.70/71 LCNs?
I’m connected through foxtel iq3 box, will I still get this channel once u change over?
It’s already happened in Brisbane. Some were caught off guard when and only noticed the change when their standard definition TV’S and set top boxes stopped getting the stations.
CHANNEL 7TWO – SHOULD MOVE to HD.
nothing will improve home and away
and what of us in regional areas? When do we get these upgrades?
So 7, 70 and 71 which show the same will be in HD! why not put other shows on 70 and 71.
Blake
How about transmitting all the channels in regional Australia?
How about going 4k to give people who have 4k tvs something to utilise their tvs fully
Hope that means a clearer picture on playback with recordings
7flix should be hd too
Lost 7 mate over a year ago.
Lost abc24 months ago.
Now have lost video of all the rest of 7.
Rescan just removes the channel completely.
Well done!
all good to say they should go to hd but my reasonably late model tv does not support it so now i have no channel 7’s at all
7HD CHANNEL 7
