Channel Seven could face defamation charges after Sunrise wrongfully names Bondi Junction killer.

Channel Seven is embroiled in a new legal battle following a blunder on its Sunrise program, where it erroneously identified a University of Technology Sydney (UTS) student as the perpetrator behind the tragic killings of six individuals at Bondi Junction Westfield.

On a Sunday morning broadcast, Sunrise incorrectly named “Benjamin Cohen, 40,” as the killer. The name, which had been erroneously circulating on social media, was also published on Seven’s website and its YouTube channel.

New South Wales Police later clarified that the actual suspect was Joel Cauchi from Queensland, who was fatally shot by a policewoman during the incident.

Mr Cohen, distressed by the false identification, has hired high-profile lawyer Patrick George and barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC, known for representing figures such as Heston Russell, Christian Porter, and Lisa Wilkinson.

When queried about the potential for claims against individuals who also shared the erroneous information online, Mr George indicated that his client is currently focusing legal actions solely against Channel Seven.

Seven now has 28 days to address the allegations after receiving a concerns notice issued today.

In response to the misidentification, a Seven spokesperson stated,

“The mistake was human error. It was escalated immediately and rectified. Seven sincerely apologises for the error.”

  1. Yeah, this was deserving and to me just as damaging to the 7news brand as the Luhrmann scandal.

They only have themselves to blame.
