Disney+ is set to premiere its new original series, “Shardlake”, on 1 May. The series, which is based on the popular Tudor murder-mystery novels by C.J. Sansom, promises a blend of suspense, mystery, and historical drama. All episodes will be available for streaming from the launch date.

Set in the tumultuous period of the 16th century in England, during the dissolution of the monasteries, “Shardlake” follows the life of Matthew Shardlake, a dedicated lawyer played by Arthur Hughes.

Shardlake’s routine life is disrupted when Thomas Cromwell, portrayed by Sean Bean, orders him to solve a murder at a monastery in Scarnsea. The victim, a commissioner working on Cromwell’s behalf, was collecting evidence to shut the monastery down, making it crucial for Cromwell’s political standing that the case is resolved swiftly.

The series introduces Jack Barak, played by Anthony Boyle, as Shardlake’s companion, whose true motives are unclear, adding to the intrigue. The monastery’s inhabitants, fearful and defensive, create a challenging environment for the investigation, enhancing the series’ suspenseful atmosphere.

Supporting cast includes Babou Ceesay, Paul Kaye, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, and others, who bring to life the eerie setting of Scarnsea with their portrayals of the monks and locals.

“Shardlake” is penned by Stephen Butchard and directed by Justin Chadwick, known for his work on “The Other Boleyn Girl”. The series is produced by John Griffin and executive produced by George Ormond, Mark Pybus, and Stevie Lee. It was commissioned by Lee Mason for Disney+, with Jonny Richards overseeing the project for the streaming service.

“Shardlake” premieres 1 May on Disney+.
