Watch the gripping story of ‘Bread & Roses,’ a documentary about Afghan women’s fight for rights, premiering on Apple TV+.
Apple Original Films has acquired the worldwide rights to the feature documentary “Bread & Roses”, a significant film that was both a selection at the Cannes Film Festival and a nominee for the Cannes Golden Eye. This compelling documentary highlights the steadfast resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban.
The documentary is produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi under their production company, Excellent Cadaver, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai through her company, Extracurricular. The film is directed by Sahra Mani, known for her impactful filmmaking in “A Thousand Girls Like Me”.
Following its notable premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, “Bread & Roses” is scheduled for a global premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, 21 June.
“Closing girls’ schools in Afghanistan is not just a matter of feminist concern; rather, it is a matter of international security. The Taliban recognises that the children of educated mothers are difficult to indoctrinate, and are less susceptible to becoming their future soldiers,”
explained Sahra Mani.
“Ensuring that girls’ schools remain open in Afghanistan is crucial for the preservation and safety of our entire world.”
“Bread & Roses” not only explores the impact of the Taliban’s control over Kabul on women’s rights and livelihoods but also follows three women fighting to regain their independence. The film provides a stark and powerful portrayal of their struggles, capturing the essence of their resilience and spirit.
Produced in association with Extracurricular and the Eyan Foundation, “Bread & Roses” is part of the award-winning lineup of Apple Original documentary films. This lineup includes notable works such as Davis Guggenheim’s “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie”, which won at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards and garnered four Emmy Awards, as well as the Emmy-nominated “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me”.
