Stan unveils The Tattooist of Auschwitz, a series depicting an extraordinary love story amid tragedy.
Stan has unveiled the trailer for its latest Stan Original Series, “The Tattooist of Auschwitz”, set to debut on 2 May, exclusively on Stan.
The series spans six episodes, dramatising the internationally acclaimed novel by Heather Morris. It narrates the true-to-life tale of Lali and Gita Sokolov, a couple who found love in the most unlikely of places—the Auschwitz concentration camp—amidst the Holocaust horrors.
The trailer introduces viewers to Lali Sokolov, played by Harvey Keitel in his later years, sharing his haunting Auschwitz memories with author Heather Morris (portrayed by Melanie Lynskey). Through Lali’s flashbacks, portrayed by Jonah Hauer-King, the story unfolds, highlighting his encounter and burgeoning love story with Gita (Anna Próchniak), set against the backdrop of the infamous concentration camp.
Significant emotional depth is added to the trailer and the series through an original score by Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve, renowned for their Academy Award-winning compositions.
In 1942, Lali, a Slovakian Jew, arrives at Auschwitz and is appointed as a Tätowierer, tasked with marking prisoners with their identification numbers. It’s during this grim duty he meets Gita, sparking a love story that strives to overcome the surrounding brutality. Their relationship is constantly tested under the watchful eye of the unpredictable Nazi SS officer Stefan Baretzki (Jonas Nay).
The narrative also explores Lali’s life six decades on, as he recounts his past to Morris, facing the traumatic memories of his youth and the profound love that blossomed in darkness.
Tali Shalom-Ezer directs the series, with Claire Mundell of Synchronicity Films serving as executive producer. It’s a collaborative production involving Sky Studios, Stan Australia, and All3Media International, also airing on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland, and Peacock in the US. Jacquelin Perske leads as Executive Producer and head writer, with contributions from writers Evan Placey and Gabbie Asher.
