BINGE and Foxtel are set to premiere the eagerly anticipated seven-episode limited series The Sympathizer on 15 April, offering a new episode every week.
This series brings together an impressive ensemble cast, including Australian actor Hoa Xuande, Emmy winner Sandra Oh, Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr. in various roles, and actors Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, and Alan Trong. The project is spearheaded by co-showrunners and executive producers Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar.
Adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and a cross-cultural satire. It navigates the life of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the tumultuous final days of the Vietnam War and his subsequent life as a refugee in Los Angeles, hinting that his espionage days are far from over.
The series is a collective effort with Park Chan-wook also taking the helm as director for the first three episodes, alongside Don McKellar‘s contributions as co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Robert Downey Jr. not only stars in the series but also serves as an executive producer alongside Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell for Team Downey, Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media, Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, the author Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Jisun Back for Moho Film.
Directors Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden are on board for episodes four and five to seven, respectively, with writing credits including Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King, and Tea Ho. This collaboration marks a co-production between HBO, A24, and Rhombus Media, produced in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
