The 75th Emmys ceremony, a highly anticipated event in the television industry, is set to commence at 12:00 pm AEDT on Tuesday, January 16.

This year’s event, which marks the 75th anniversary of celebrating excellence in television, will be broadcast on Foxtel and Binge.

The festivities will kick off with the red carpet arrivals, scheduled to begin at 9:00 am AEDT, offering viewers a glimpse of the glamour and excitement preceding the main event.

The Emmys have chosen actor and comedian Anthony Anderson to take up the mantle. Anderson is renowned for his leading role in the sitcom Black-ish and its spin-offs, Mixed-ish and Grown-ish.

This year’s Emmys come after an unusual delay of five months. The postponement was due to industrial action by the Hollywood SAG-AFTRA and writers’ unions. The strike, a significant movement in the industry, was primarily focused on advocating for better working conditions and protections against the rapidly evolving AI technologies, which are being increasingly adopted by major studios for cost-saving measures.

The delay of the 2023 Emmys into 2024 has led to some interesting twists in terms of eligibility criteria for nominations. For the current ceremony, programs that aired between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023, are eligible. This means that even though the Golden Globe favourite, The Bear, released its second season in 2023, the nominations it received this year are exclusively for its first season.

Leading the pack in nominations this year is Binge’s Succession, with an impressive 27 nods. The show, which has already demonstrated its dominance by sweeping the Golden Globes, is expected to be a major winner at the Emmys as well. Australian actress Sarah Snook, who recently won Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Golden Globes, is also in contention for the same category at the Emmys.

Trailing closely behind is The Last of Us, securing 24 nominations. Pedro Pascal is nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and poses a significant challenge to Kieran Culkin from Succession, who is currently the frontrunner after his Golden Globe win.

The 75th Emmys ceremony starts at 12:00 pm AEDT on Tuesday, January 16 on Foxtel and Binge.
