TV Blackbox can reveal that popular Melbourne-based news journalist Adam Hegarty is set to be named as one of two new reporters joining the cast of 60 Minutes.
Hegarty, currently a prominent reporter on 9News in Melbourne, has made a significant impact with his unique and engaging journalistic style, resonating strongly with the audience. His elevation to 60 Minutes is seen as a significant career advancement and comes amid significant competition from within the network for the coveted role.
In a strategic move, Channel 9 plans to introduce two new reporters to the 60 Minutes team in 2024, aiming to bring a fresh, youthful dynamic to the flagship program.
Hegarty has worked in Nine’s Melbourne and Brisbane newsrooms since 2018. Before this he was involved in international journalism, functioning as a freelance reporter and producer in London, with notable work for organisations like Sky News, TRT World, The Times, and Network Ten.
His international assignments have been varied and significant, covering major events like the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in London, the French elections in Paris, and the critical Brexit negotiations in Brussels. Beyond Europe, Hegarty also spent considerable time in Beijing, gaining valuable experience in different cultural and political landscapes.
His roots in journalism are traced back to his early days at News Corp, where he began as a cadet and later transitioned into a crime reporter for The Advertiser.
Regarding the appointment, a spokesperson for Channel 9 played their cards close to the chest, only telling this website,
“Decisions on new 60 Minutes reporters are pending and when they are confirmed we will announce.”
The official announcement of the new additions to the 60 Minutes team is anticipated to occur at a media event in Melbourne on January 19.
The show, a staple of current affairs programming, is undergoing a refresh in its reporting team following the departures of Tom Steinfort, who is moving to the 6pm newsreader role in Melbourne, and Sarah Abo, who is focusing on her duties as a presenter for Today.
Adam congrats on your promotion. You are missed in Melbourne.
