On Friday, 7 News cameraman Paul Walker clocked up an impressive 40 years with the Network working within the ATN newsroom in Sydney.

The major milestone for the long-serving cameraman was marked with a small presentation in the Sydney newsroom on Friday afternoon, with colleagues celebrating his many achievements over his time with the network.

In an email shared with staff, colleague Todd MacDonald said of Paul’s time with the network:

“Paul has always been someone who puts his heart and soul into his work. Over the years he has been part of history, shooting many of the biggest stories and major events the Sydney Newsroom has covered. (and he has even won a couple of awards along the way)”.

“Obviously, working as a news camera operator is a tough physical career path so reaching 40 years of service is a remarkable achievement and he should be proud”.

Former 7 News Director Jason Morrison, who left the network mid-last year after 8 years in the top job, shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) celebrating Paul’s time with Seven, saying:

“Congratulations @7NewsSydney cameraman Paul Walker, who clocks up 40 yrs on the job at ATN-7 today. Paul has travelled the Country, the World to cover News. @pdwnews a skilled and deeply loyal, enthusiastic bloke to have on your side. News Cameramen: the often unsung heroes of TV”

Looking back at his time with 7 News, Paul shared the above image on Instagram with the caption:

“For 40 years, my Seven News lens captured humanity’s vivid hues—the triumphs, tragedies, resilience, and fragility of our world. From war-torn lands to celebrations, I’ve witnessed conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Israel, and more”.

“Amid chaos, I found solace in unsung heroes navigating adversity. Elections, crimes, tragedies—I’ve documented realities often unseen. But amidst darkness, I saw hope in communities rallying together. Celebrations, newborn cries, heroes, Olympics, 100 candles —the unifying power of life. Beyond stories, it’s about people- family, colleagues, mentors”.

“Family, especially my wife Monica, sacrificed for this journey. From historical moments to the recent pandemic, my lens mirrored history’s ebb and flow. It’s been humbling, awe-inspiring—a privilege to witness our times’ tapestry…Ready for Monday’s next news shift”.

Colleagues and industry peers commented and added praise for Paul to the post, including 9 News Melbourne weekend anchor Peter Hitchener, 7 News colleagues Jodie Speers and Michael Usher, Louise Milligan from ABC News, Sunrise newsreader Edwina Bartholomew and former 7 News Spotlight reporter Denham Hitchcock.
