Perth’s very own Channel 7 Telethon experienced another momentous weekend, demonstrating once more the immense generosity of West Australians.
The event reached a record-breaking sum of $77.5 million, all earmarked for the welfare of sick children.
Originally inaugurated in 1968, Telethon has solidified its reputation as the globe’s premier TV fundraising event. Over the years, its unwavering mission to provide a brighter tomorrow for young ones has culminated in a grand total of over $600 million in donations.
The fundraising juggernaut was hosted at the RAC Arena and spanned 26 live hours between Saturday and Sunday. It was telecasted on Channel 7 in WA, with national viewers tuning in via 7plus.
Several renowned figures threw their weight behind the cause. Among them were Australian music icons Jimmy Barnes and Marcia Hines, representing Seven’s Australian Idol. Additionally, Tarryn Stokes, the victor of The Voice 2023, was in attendance.
The event also received unwavering support from Channel 7’s own lineup. Notable personalities like Dr. Chris Brown, Natalie Barr, Matt Shirvington, Ant Middleton, Larry Emdur, Kylie Gillies, Charlie Albone, and the Home and Away ensemble featuring Lynne McGranger, Matt Evans, Juliet Godwin, Stephanie Panozzo, Luke Van Os, and Adam Rowland rallied behind the cause. Liam Bartlett from 7NEWS Spotlight also made an appearance.
On the ground, 7NEWS’ Perth team was represented in full force. This included the likes of Susannah Carr, Rick Ardon, Basil Zempilas – marking his 14th stint as Telethon host, Adrian Barich, Ryan Daniels, Matt Tinney, Sam Jolly, Angela Tsun, and Tim McMillan.
This year, the Telethon Challenge Yourself campaign witnessed unprecedented participation levels, with countless children, schools, sporting groups, and community entities from both Perth and the wider WA region getting involved.
Kerry Stokes, AC, Chairman of Seven West Media, reflected on the event, stating,
“I am incredibly proud of this year’s Telethon Weekend fundraising efforts and the tremendous support and generosity on display from the WA community.“
“Watching young kids helping and supporting other kids doing it tough inspires us all and is the reason why Telethon is an integral part of the WA community.
Together, we’re creating a future filled with hope and opportunity for sick and disadvantaged children.”
Stokes concluded by expressing gratitude towards all contributors, from youngsters to philanthropists, as well as both State and Federal Governments.
