In the adrenaline-filled world of reality TV, few moments are as nail-biting as the room reveals on The Block.

This week, it was all about the kids’ rooms. With just 24 hours to make those final touches, our Blockheads were both elated and stressed, trying to shape rooms that would appeal to young hearts while meeting the exacting standards of the judges.

One particular contestant, Steph, was feeling the weight of past critiques. She and her partner Gian had previously faced harsh criticism for not adhering to the brief in their kids’ room. Their desire to redeem themselves was palpable.

In the midst of this, Leslie and Liberty took to shopping, a strategy move perhaps to gather their thoughts and find those last-minute gems. However, a sense of exclusion plagued Steph, leading to a heart-to-heart with Leslie, who felt their relationship was more give than take.

An intriguing subplot involved Max and Charlie Cress. These aren’t just any participants; they’ve grown up on the show, being the children of its executive producer. Their scrutiny of the rooms felt deeply personal, almost nostalgic. Among their highlights were the audacious rock climbing wall from Leah and Ash and the poetic swinging chair by Steph and Gian.

As the sun set, Scott Cam, in his signature style, declared “tools down”. While physical exhaustion was visible, the spirit of creativity shone through. Each of the five pairs unveiled rooms that were nothing short of masterpieces in their own right.

To heighten the drama, Scott introduced a surprise – guest judges for the evening, Olive and Freddie Fox. They were joined in the HQ by the watchful eye of Marty Fox – a moment of suspense as participants awaited his feedback.

Breaking it down, house-by-house:

House No.1 – Kyle and Leslie: With an expenditure of $16,743, this duo opted for a basketball theme. But the judges felt the theme was a tad restrictive. “Does it have broad appeal?” they pondered, expressing concerns about its marketability. Leslie, visibly emotional, took the feedback to heart.

House No.2 – Leah and Ash: With a budget of $21,912, they presented rooms that resonated vibrancy. Judges admired the Grafico wallpaper and the climbing wall. Shaynna couldn’t help but comment, “They’re truly back at the top of their game.” A small hiccup was the choice of daybed over a traditional bed.

House No.3 – Kristy and Brett: Splurging the same amount as Steph and Gian, $25,580, they chose a striking Grafico wallpaper. After some initial uncertainty, all three judges were won over. They did, however, find room for critique in the quality of Brett’s paintwork.

House No.4 – Steph and Gian: The stakes were high, but they delivered. Twin rooms that evoked wonder. “Perhaps the most sophisticated kids’ bedroom on this show,” gushed Darren. Their hard work was rewarded with an impressive $40,000 prize.

House No.5 – Eliza and Liberty: Being the most budget-conscious at $13,217, the duo, however, showcased rooms that radiated universal charm. Marty, though, raised an eyebrow at the room lighting.

This year’s Blockheads seemed to have pulled out all stops, diving deep into childhood fantasies. From sports motifs, climbing walls to dance floors – it was all on display. But beyond aesthetics, the judges sought practicality.

A delightful addition was Marty Fox’s children, Olive and Freddie, who conferred a bonus point gnome to Leah and Ash’s room, hinting at potential future game-changers.
