Through their collaboration, Screen Australia’s First Nations Department and Network 10 have given the nod to six distinguished projects to garner up to $70,000 each in production funding.

This largesse is part of the First Facts: First Nations Factual Showcase, launched to shine a spotlight on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander documentary creators.

Initiated earlier in February, the goal of this endeavour is to extend a platform to budding and established filmmakers, enabling them to curate 10-minute documentaries set to air on Network 10.

Following an intensive workshop in June, six prime candidates were earmarked to transition into the production phase. Come early 2025, viewers can anticipate these documentaries to grace 10 Play and Network 10’s vibrant social media platforms.

Angela Bates, the spearhead of Screen Australia’s First Nations Department, shared her perspective:

“Teaming up with Network 10 signifies our unwavering pledge to amplify First Nations narratives and the masterminds behind them.

It’s invigorating to back such a diverse slate of projects that resonate with Network 10’s viewers, giving them a taste of our profound cultural legacy.”

Echoing the enthusiasm, Daniel Monaghan, Senior Vice President Content and Programming at Paramount Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), Network 10’s parent firm, stated:

“It’s genuinely heartening to usher these projects into the production fold. These pieces delve into the multifaceted lives of First Nations individuals, merging contemporary nuances with age-old customs.

We’re poised to showcase these poignant tales, each echoing universal truths, but through the singular lens of First Nations creators.”

The documentaries slated for production encompass:

Anangu Way: A cinematic journey following Keenan and his father, Lydon. While Keenan is city-bound, Lydon embraces the Anangu way in the wilderness. Keenan’s voyage from Perth to Tjuntjuntjara seeks to reconnect with his roots and craft a traditional woomera. Directed by Tace Stevens with Brooke Collard producing.

Burabura: This visual marvel pays homage to the untouched Australian bush, juxtaposing the urban hustle with nature’s tranquillity, urging viewers to embrace their origins. Tyson Mowarin spearheads the direction and writing, with Robyn Marais producing.
