In a new six-part documentary series Larapinta, viewers are invited to explore the rich history and current challenges of one of the world’s oldest rivers.

The series, which debuts on Saturday, 19 August at 8.30pm on NITV and SBS On Demand, introduces viewers to the inhabitants, scientists, traditional owners, and other key figures who play a role in maintaining the river’s health and heritage.

Narrated by Talia Liddle, an Arrernte and Luritja woman, “Larapinta” offers a personal and in-depth look at the river’s significance to her and others who call the region home. Liddle recounts her transformative experience filming along the river and learning from the elders and communities who have inhabited its banks for generations.

Also known as the Finke River, Larapinta has been central to the lives of First Nations peoples, who have relied on it for nourishment, comfort, and transportation. The river, stretching over 750 kilometres, is also home to diverse flora and fauna and is deeply interwoven with the cultural, environmental, and historical tapestry of Central Australia.

Marissa McDowell, Head of Commissions, NITV, expressed excitement about showcasing the series to Australians and emphasised the importance of understanding Larapinta’s cultural and environmental significance. The series also explores the impacts of climate change and colonisation on the river and its surroundings.

Producers Mitchell Stanley and Michaela Perske said the series reveals the river as seen by Traditional Owners – a living entity that requires nurturing and care. Angela Bates, Screen Australia’s Head of First Nations, echoed these sentiments, noting the urgent need to protect and preserve the river for future generations.

“Larapinta” is set to stream for free on SBS On Demand with English captions and subtitles in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean. The series will also air on SBS Viceland with weekly double episodes starting 19 September.

Watch Larapinta weekly from Saturday 19 August at 8.30pm on NITV. Larapinta will be available to stream for free on SBS On Demand
