You like apples? Well how do you like a solid start to the second Test live from England in primetime…apples…?

Channel 9

A Current Affair (670,000) led the way as Nine cleared the decks to deliver the biggest audience possible to The Ashes: Second Test Day 1 S1 (792,000).

Nine first in both primary (30.3%) and network (37.9%) rankings.

Channel 7

Seven offer little resistance to the stronger programming on the other primary channels after the 6pm News hour, though Home & Away (465,000) does its best. Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly (343,000) and Accused (140,000) draw smaller audiences, as does The Front Bar (231,000) in every where but MEL (140,000). A repeat of Crime Investigation Australia: Most Infamous (52,000) closes out the night.

Seven second in both primary (15.7%) and network (22.3%) rankings.

ABC

Another big comedy Wednesday for the ABC, starting with the 7:30 (481,000)/Utopia (590,000) double that again does massive business–and would otherwise have won the primetime slot. Gruen (532,000) goes large, and the finale of In Limbo (,000) follow on, maintaining a solid audience before it slides through Queen of Oz (114,000), QI (93,000), and a repeat of Still We Rise (DNR).

ABC third in both primary (12.6%) and network (17.1%) rankings.

Channel 10

The Project (178,000 6:30pm; 258,000 7pm) and MasterChef Australia (460,000) gave 10 another consistently-good start (though couldn’t compete with the cricket). The premiere of Riptide (191,000) drew a small audience, which led to even smaller audiences for So Help Me Todd (91,000) and a repeat of FBI (57,000).

10 fourth in both primary (9.4%) and network (15.5%) rankings.

SBS

A ripper episode of History of the Sitcom (93,000) opened SBS’s night, before pivoting into a repeat of Costco: Is It Really Worth It? (144,000) and Blue Lights (43,000).

SBS fifth in both primary (3.6%) and network (7.2%) rankings.
