Arriving today on Disney+ is the anticipated Marvel series, “Secret Invasion,” an exciting new instalment set in the contemporary Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The explosive new series promises to delve deeper into the cryptic and compelling character of Nick Fury, once again brought to life by Samuel L. Jackson.
Fury, the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., famously declared, “Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye,” a line immortalised in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This sentiment speaks volumes of Fury’s trust issues, a result of his storied past and, amusingly, an alien feline encounter in Captain Marvel. This guarded nature, however, may prove beneficial in the imminent series, Secret Invasion.
In “Secret Invasion,” Fury uncovers a secretive Skrull invasion of Earth, drawing him back from his outer space endeavours. This faction of Skrulls, the metamorphosing extraterrestrials that Fury and Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) once aided in Captain Marvel, has gone rogue. With the clock ticking, Fury aligns with his allies, including Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), and Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who has crafted a life on Earth, to halt the impending invasion.
Despite gracing roughly a dozen MCU instalments since his cameo in the original Iron Man’s end credits, this marks the first occasion Nick Fury will take centre stage in his own narrative. Jackson is joined by a stellar cast, featuring the return of Ben Mendelsohn as the genial Skrull Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and Martin Freeman reprising his role as Everett K. Ross.
The series also welcomes new faces. Olivia Colman, the Academy Award-winning star of “The Favourite,” makes her MCU debut as the antagonist MI6, a character described by Jackson as “cold-blooded and just relishes being that person.” Additionally, “Game of Thrones” alum Emilia Clarke steps into the role of G’iah, a Skrull freedom fighter and daughter of Talos.
