The BBC has unveiled an initial glimpse image of the highly anticipated second series of ‘Time’, the lauded drama from multi-award-winning writer Jimmy McGovern.

The three-part drama, made in partnership with BritBox International for North America, is produced by BBC Studios and is set to return to Australian screens shortly.

Set within the confines of a women’s prison, ‘Time’ offers an evocative and high-stakes depiction of life behind bars, as seen through the experiences of three distinct inmates. The second series will star Jodie Whittaker of ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Broadchurch’ fame, Tamara Lawrance from ‘The Silent Twins’ and ‘The Long Song’, and Bella Ramsey, known for her roles in ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘His Dark Materials’.

In a welcome return, Siobhan Finneran, notable for her roles in ‘Happy Valley’ and ‘Downton Abbey’, will reprise her character from the first series, Marie-Louise, a compassionate prison chaplain.

The series is penned by Jimmy McGovern, renowned for his work on ‘Broken’, ‘Cracker’, and ‘The Street’, in collaboration with Helen Black, writer of the BAFTA-nominated ‘Life and Death in the Warehouse’. Direction is under the experienced hand of Andrea Harkin, known for her work on ‘The Confessions of Frannie Langton’ and ‘The Trial Of Christine Keeler’.

The second series of ‘Time’ will also see new additions to the ensemble, including BAFTA-winner Sophie Willan, known for ‘Alma’s Not Normal’ and ‘Still Open All Hours’, alongside Julie Graham, Alicia Forde, Lisa Millett, Faye McKeever, Kayla Meikle, James Corrigan, Nicholas Nunn, and Maimuna Memon.

The narrative follows Kelsey (Bella Ramsey), Orla (Jodie Whittaker), and Abi (Tamara Lawrance) as they begin their sentences at Carlingford Prison on the same day. Confronted by a strange and potentially violent world, they find that an unexpected sense of community and understanding may still be within reach.

‘Time’ series two is a co-production with BritBox North America and receives additional funding and support from the Liverpool Film Office through the Liverpool City Region Production Fund. The series is produced by Mark Hedges, with executive producers Priscilla Parish, Michael Parke and Andrew Morrissey for BBC Studios, Lucy Richer for the BBC, and Jimmy McGovern.

Viewers can catch up on ‘Time’ series one via BBC First or on demand. Stay tuned for the arrival of the second series on Australian screens.
