One Plus One returns to the screen with series 7 titled ‘The Elders’, featuring Dan Bourchier hosting enlightening discussions with respected Elders from across Australia.
This timely series precedes The Voice referendum, casting a spotlight on Indigenous culture and narratives.
Elders are known as the custodians of knowledge, storylines, and songlines, bridging the gap between past and future by conveying understanding of country and culture. In this unique series of One Plus One, Bourchier, the host of The Drum and special correspondent for The Voice referendum, converses with these significant figures.
Among the eminent guests in this series are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar, 2021 Senior Australian of the Year Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann, Non-Executive Director and Stolen Generations survivor Ian Hamm, and water rights advocate Fred Hooper.
Bourchier, raised in the remote Northern Territory town of Tennant Creek, carries personal ties to the series’ subject matter. He grew up mentored by Elders from the region while connecting with his own Indigenous heritage from his mother’s family in Victoria.
The series’ opening episode centres around June Oscar, renowned as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. While she fervently advocates for First Nations people domestically and internationally, it is on her Bunuba country, located in the remote West Australian Kimberley region, where she feels a deep connection.
Speaking from the flood-affected Fitzroy Valley, Oscar shares the origins of her motivation for social change, her crusade against the lethal effects of alcohol on her community, and her role as her family’s matriarch.
One Plus One – The Elders’ series is an ABC NEWS production, with Dan Bourchier presenting. The show is the brainchild of Executive Producer Annie White and Series Producer Stephanie Boltje, who have expertly crafted a platform for these crucial conversations.
