Amazon’s Prime Video is set to launch its 2023 Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) coverage with a Friday, May 26 Commissioner’s Cup game between the Phoenix Mercury and Minnesota Lynx.

This move solidifies Prime Video’s stance as a key platform for WNBA coverage on Fridays.

The season’s coverage commences at midday AEST and includes four games from the annual Commissioner’s Cup. This includes the highly anticipated 2023 Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game on Wednesday, August 16. The Commissioner’s Cup features a portion of regular-season games, with the top-performing team from each conference competing for the Cup Championship and a special prize pool.

Prime Video has secured exclusive global streaming rights (excluding China, Japan, the UK, Italy, Spain, Finland, and Germany) to 20 WNBA games for the 2023 season, which will include five doubleheaders.

“We believe in the power of women’s sports to inspire and entertain audiences around the world,”

said Marie Donoghue, Vice President of Global Sports Video at Amazon.

“Our investment extends beyond live coverage; we’re dedicated to storytelling about female athletes and empowering female leadership. We’re excited to bring the thrill of women’s basketball to Prime members again.”

In addition to the live coverage, Prime Video announced a new documentary film, Power of the Dream, which tells the inspiring and unlikely true story of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream team. The film highlights how a group of professional women’s basketball players challenged a WNBA team owner and rallied behind now-Senator Raphael Warnock, leading to significant changes in both their sport and U.S. politics.

Produced by Industrial Media, Trilogy Films, Joy Mill Entertainment, and TOGETHXR, the film includes producers such as Dawn Porter, Sue Bird, Nneka Ogwumike, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

As part of a Prime membership, the WNBA on Prime Video will be accessible worldwide on various compatible devices. Prime Video games will be distributed in the participating teams’ markets through their local distribution partners.
