Beloved Australian sports broadcaster Sandy Roberts, at the age of 73, has opened up about his battle with the incurable blood cancer, myeloma.

The acclaimed Channel 7 and Fox Footy sports commentator was diagnosed with this devastating disease in May 2022. This form of blood cancer has the lowest survival rate compared to other blood cancers.

Myeloma originates from malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow, leading to a multitude of health complications such as a weakened immune system, bone destruction, and impaired kidney function. Despite his diagnosis, Roberts is determined to share his story and raise funds to provide support and resources for over 20,000 Australians living with the disease.

Roberts recounted his experience to News Corp, saying,

“I ended up in hospital and was told I didn’t have any broken bones or internal injuries, but that I did have cancer.”

“Just like that; we had no idea. If I hadn’t fallen, who knows what would have been the outcome.”

Sandy Roberts has faced various health challenges, having undergone open heart surgery just three months before his cancer diagnosis. He expressed his shock at discovering his illness, telling News Corp.

“It was such a shock. I’d had open heart surgery three months earlier and came out of that feeling good.”

Following a remarkable 46-year broadcasting career, Roberts retired in 2019. His impressive resume includes covering Summer and Winter Olympics, AFL Grand Finals, Australian Opens, Melbourne Cup carnivals, and numerous other major sporting events.

Roberts is now using his platform to provide hope for others battling myeloma.

“We are speaking up to give other Myeloma patients like me hope,” he said. “And I am asking you to give generously to Myeloma Australia. There are trials all around the world. I am asking for help to cure myeloma.”
