It is good to see “We Interrupt This Broadcast” attracting solid numbers for its reruns. It may not perform particularly well in overnights, but the reruns are helping to bring the numbers up to a more typical overnight viewership level.
Hi Ian – the challenge is we can’t know if the re-run is hitting a new audience or a repeat audience. I’m less likely to put any value in them (especially when the repeat is still drawing such a small amount) no matter the program. Also, their inclusion actually aren’t bringing the show up to a “more typical” level. It’s still way off where Seven need it to be.
Hi Mr. Molk,
Thanks for your reply. You make some very good points. I like to think that a sizeable majority of the viewers for a re-run are a new audience, especially when the re-run airs within a week of the show’s original airing. However, you are correct that we can’t know if that’s actually the case. If only we could know whether a viewer watched the program previously or not.
Where do you think Seven needs the program to be in order for it to be successful?
G’day Ian – I’m hoping for their sake that Idol was an anomaly, though it was rating fine it’s just that everyone else got in the way. WITB isn’t bad, however the cast haven’t been looked after with the post-production (kill the laugh track at least). Farmer will see their hopes lift I’m sure, and having the AFL back means they win the back half of the week (though often the horse has bolted by then). They need to think outside the box a bit and not lean into legacy brands as hard as they have been. Take some risks (to be fair – sketch comedy in primetime isn’t a risk, except when you grossly underfund it).
Hi Mr. Molk,
I share your hope that Idol’s less than ideal performance is an anomaly. Going up against MAFS is tough, and Idol has done okay in spite of it. Idol has proven to be somewhat competitive with Survivor, even though Survivor has the edge. I agree that WITB needs some work, but it has good potential. Putting up against MAFS was a mistake, and it should be given another chance when MAFS isn’t on the air. Pair that with proper funding, and Seven could have a solid performer on its hands.
Hi Ian – I reckon the key part of that is the funding component. The budget for WITB was not what it could have been.
