I’ve often said Australian TV needs a stripped show at 9pm and this was the idea I came up with. Unfortunately, the networks weren’t interested but I’m keen to hear what you think.
I was going through some old files the other week and found this pitch document and I thought it would be interesting to share it.
As I’ve been harping on about the lack of programming at 9pm I decided to pitch a low-cost show that could be a fun way for people to end their night. The plan was that with great content it would become destination viewing.
You will notice some of the concepts use elements of Studio 10 and other shows I have worked on, but there are new ideas to make this worthy of being a prime time show.
It’s important to note none of the names included in the pitch were asked if they would be interested in being part of a show like this.
The people in this pitch document are the people I wanted on the show but the cast might have ended up very differently to those pitched for various reasons (i.e. lack of interest, other work commitments, wages etc).
This is the supporting slideshow of a pitch where many details would have been expanded upon from what is written on the slides.
Share your thoughts in the comments section and we will discuss this pitch and possible 9pm ideas in the next episode of the TV Blackbox podcast.

Yeah, I’d watch that except for one thing: the comedian. I don’t think it’s necessary. We have plenty of excellent journos who can bring the humour as well as enough gravitas to present the really serious stuff. You’ve got me thinking about casting, too.
I can see why that didn’t happen.
Nothing new concept wise and the talent mediocre.
Ross and I would watch it.
Nothing new there. I’ll stick to the Cheap Seats.
Hmm I think this is too close to what The Project was originally penned to be, but you’re just pitching it for a different timeslot. Talent proposed also doesn’t act as a drawcard – too white, too commercial and not overly funny. I also think it would struggle appealing to the younger demos, which helped HYBPA when they struggled to get off the ground in their first years.
Sorry Rob, sounds super old-fashioned with the live cross etc. But agreed it’s a time slot ripe for the taking.
Looks good but needs some live music as part of it
I like the concept. For the lefty side Sam Dastyari would be a good host.
The concept is excellent. The choice of hosts will be paramount to the success of the program.
Congratulations, you’ve invented the Aldi version of The Project. It’s a no from me.
