Amidst much anticipation for the first season finale, many fans have already watched the blockbuster episode before it’s supposed to air.
The final episode for the first season of House of the Dragon has already leaked online, two days before it’s supposed to air.
The prequel series to Game of Thrones has become one of the most popular programs for the year, smashing viewing records both overseas and for Binge in Australia.
And while the ten-episode season is due to conclude on Monday AEDT, leakers with possession of the finale, titled ‘The Black Queen’, have swiftly been publishing them on illegal torrent websites.
A spokesperson for HBO, the network which produces the show in the US, has responded to the leak.
They said:
“We are aware that the tenth episode of House of the Dragon has been posted on illegal torrent sites. It appears to have originated from a distribution partner in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa region.
“HBO is aggressively monitoring and pulling these copies from the internet. We’re disappointed that this unlawful action has disrupted the viewing experience for loyal fans of the show, who will get to see a pristine version of the episode when it premieres Sunday (Monday on Binge in Australia).”
While this is the first time a leak for House of the Dragon has occurred, its preceding series Game of Thrones was prone to many throughout its eight-season run.
One notable instance was when hackers threatened to leak the seventh season finale unless a multimillion dollar ransom demand was met.
The first season finale for House of the Dragon is set to be one of the biggest episodes of the franchise yet, according to the episode’s director, Greg Yaitanes.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Yaitanes said:
“If I have five things that I, in 30 years [of directing] am most proud of, this is absolutely on that list.”
House of the Dragon is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen.
A second season has already been ordered, and is expected to air in 2024.
House of the Dragon’s first season finale airs at 12pm AEDT, Monday October 24th, on Binge in Australia.
