“GREATEST EVER” ORIGIN DECIDER delivers record audience figures for CHANNEL 9

One of the greatest State of Origin series ever played has attracted record numbers of viewers and set a new Australian record, with the three 2022 games attracting the highest Total TV audience since 2019, and becoming the most-watched live streaming event in Australian history. 

Wednesday night’s blockbuster decider in Brisbane, which is being hailed as one of the greatest Origin games ever contested, attracted a national average audience of 2.585 million viewers on Linear TV (Metro: 1.792m / Regional: 793,000) and a Live BVOD figure of 463,000 taking the TotalTV audience to 3.048 million viewers.

The Decider was the highest rating Origin game on Total TV since 2019’s Game 1.

Viewers switched to 9Now, with the game attracting a record BVOD Live average audience of 463,000, up 74% year-on-year, and making it the highest ever live streaming event in Australian TV history.  

The three matches have now set the benchmark for live streaming events, with the Sydney, Perth and Brisbane games attracting the three highest BVOD live figures (Game 1: 425,000 / Game 2: 393,000 / Game 3: 463,000) of all time across all broadcasters.

TIMESLOT ANALYSIS:

  • State of Origin Game 3 has smashed all records achieving the highest ever Live BVOD Audience against all networks with 463,000, up +74% YoY. This equates to 56.5 million minutes (+92% YoY) and 1.2 million stream starts (+73% YoY).
  • State of Origin Game 3 was the highest rating match since Game 1 2019 with a Total TV audience of 3.048 million viewers
  • The 2022 State of Origin series has become the highest rating series since 2019 with Total TV.
  • State of Origin Game 3 was Australia’s dominant No.1 program with People 25-54, 16-39, GS + Child and Total People.

The success of the series continues to highlight Nine’s market-leading digital transformation, with Australians devouring State of Origin across a multitude of Nine’s platforms from 9Now, WWOS.com.au, and various mastheads and audio assets.
