BEAUTIFUL DESIGNS FROM THE BAY: SHELTER ORIGINALS – DESIGN STORY: BYRON BAY

The latest Shelter Originals series continues this month, with four new episodes featuring some of the most stunning designs Byron Bay has to offer. From an incredible ocean vista at Wategos to the subtropical lowland rainforest of the Big Scrub, DESIGN STORY – BYRON BAY is a six part series exploring some of the most inspirational spaces in this famous coastal region. The series includes interviews with well known interior designers such as Louella Boitel-Gill and Julia Ashwood, and features legendary locations such as Lune de Sang, the Range, Las Palmas, the Eltham Hotel and Soma.

  • Episode 3: The Eltham Hotel (12 mins) Australia 2022 (Available 4 April)

Julia Ashwood and her husband Matt Rabbidge were courting patrons of the Eltham Hotel before they became owners. They adored the historic village of Eltham, nestled in the hinterland and far removed from the bustle of Byron Bay. When Julia Ashwood suddenly became the proud new co-owner of The Eltham Hotel in 2019, she was tasked with bringing new life to the five guest rooms situated above the much loved local watering hole built in 1902.

  • Episode 4: Soma (12 mins) Australia 2022 (Available 11 April)

Gary Gorrow taught meditation for many years with a goal of one day teaching in a space of his own. When the time was right Gary turned to his brother, a hotelier residing in Bali, for design inspiration. The result was a bespoke architectural space more ambitious than Gary had ever imagined.

  • Episode 5: Las Palmas (12 mins) Australia 2022 (Available 18 April)

Sally McGarry grew up in Fenner House, a home designed by eminent Australian architect Robin Boyd and commissioned by her grandfather, Professor Frank Fenner, a virologist and pioneer of environmental design. Fond childhood memories of garden parties and family gatherings at Fenner House inspired Sally to recreate a visceral connection to nature and family life at Las Palmas, her home in Byron Bay.

  • Episode 6: The Range (12 mins) Australia 2022 (Available 25 April)

Childhood memories of the Canary Islands and a joint sabbatical in Spain became key influences on the design of Emma and Tom Lane’s finca inspired home, set amongst 120 acres of Byron hinterland. A last minute halt to the demolition of a 1980’s farm house on the property saw the Lanes come up with a design that incorporates many of the original features from the old homestead alongside distinctive Spanish elements.
