“Part of the design process is being captivated by this part of the world.”

Why has design from the coastal area of northern New South Wales, Australia become coveted the world over?

With one of the most stunning coastlines in the country outside, the challenge of trying to match this beauty has created an exceptional standard of interior design in the region.

From an incredible ocean vista at Wategos to the subtropical lowland rainforest of the Big Scrub, DESIGN STORY: BYRON BAY is a six part series exploring some of the most inspirational spaces in this famous coastal region.

DESIGN STORY includes interviews with well known interior designers such as Louella Boitel Gil and Julia Ashwood, and features legendary locations such as Lune de Sang, the Range, Las Palmas, the Eltham Hotel and Soma.

  • Episode 1: Lune De Sange (12 mins) Australia 2022 (Available March 21)

Since 2008, Andy and Deirdre have been on a mission to start ‘putting things back’ by regenerating the Big Scrub – an ancient subtropical rainforest surrounding their sculptural residence and sustainable timber plantation at Lune de Sang. A consideration for the past, present and future of architecture and our collective place on the landscape is artfully expressed in this episode through captivating interviews with Andy and Deirdre Plummer.

  • Episode 2: Pandanas Beach Shack (12mins) Australia 2022 (Available March 28)

In this episode, eclectic Byron based interior designer Louella Boitel-Gil takes us to an original beach shack in Wategos, renovated for playful clients who briefed Louella to ‘embrace the shack’. Louella speaks candidly about her influences during the design process and how working closely with clients is key to the success of any project.

100% of publicly donated funds received by GIVIT for this appeal will be used to buy essential items and services for people affected by flooding in Northern New South Wales.

DESIGN ON A FAULTLINE: ARTQUAKE

“A natural calamity can be seen as an impenetrable sign of a destiny that wipes out what was supposed to remain.”

Italy is unique in the world: it has a priceless historical and artistic heritage and is at a high risk of earthquakes, sitting atop the meeting point of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.

ARTQUAKE looks at this exceptional situation, and takes an in depth look into the relationship between human communities, natural phenomena and artistic creation: a relationship that is upset and reasserted every time an earthquake strikes.

Exploring the areas of greatest significance, interviews with experts from various subjects, archive footage and inserts in animated graphics, ARTQUAKE shows how communities and institutions manage to best live with natural underground disasters and protect and produce stunning and timeless art.

THE HEINZ EMIGHOLZ COLLECTION

“GROUNDBREAKING & SPELLBINDING”

New to Shelter Channels this March is over 30 hours of the very best of one of Germany’s pre-eminent architectural filmmakers; with the HEINZ EMIGHOLZ COLLECTION

Shelter brings a huge collection of German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz’ architectural films together for the first time.

For the past two decades, Emigholz has dedicated himself to an ambitious series of documentaries that focus on the work of visionary 20th century architects.

Disavowing traditional voice-over commentary, Emigholz reduces his soundtrack to ambient sounds and the acoustic experience of the spaces he explores. Refusing any single master shot, Emigholz offers a montage of carefully chosen architectural details that lead the viewer through a given building and towards a new appreciation of the light and space crucial to these architects’ visions.

“Emigholz’s groundbreaking and spellbinding architectural films are, quite simply, cinematographic re-enactments of the immediate experience of spaces… He dissects the interior and exterior of a building, allowing the viewer to experience being there and, by studying the career of an architect, constructs a biography solely based on the works, free of commentary.”

– Cinema Scope

“Emigholz is the world’s most acute observer of architecture… The visual pleasure of his work is in its accumulating information – not only seeing and comprehending each building as it appears, but also comparing a given architect’s successive buildings, as if the viewer is in an ever-moving gallery.”

– Variety

“An ongoing series of exquisite architecture documentaries by German veteran Heinz Emigholz.”

– The Hollywood Reporter

GUEST CURATOR: TAMSIN O’NEILL FROM GREEN MAGAZINE

And to cap off an exciting March for Shelter, green magazine editor Tamsin O’Neill  has curated a collection of titles for Shelter this month.

“There are some gems in this mix, with still plenty on my ‘to watch’ list,”

said O’Neill.

“These 10 represent a mixture of themes relating to sustainability, bushfire resistance, building small and building in nature.

“I was particularly taken by DO MORE WITH LESS which looks at the work of  some young architects in Latin America, striving to deliver architecture to those who need it most.

“Tackling tiny budgets and using readily available waste and natural materials and engaging the owners in the building process, the resulting homes are full of love and beauty.

“PERMANENT CAMPING 2 highlights the complexities of building a prefabricated cabin to deliver to a remote location. Exceptional  craftsmanship and precision make this a must for any aspiring builder.”
