ASH BARTY and the All-Aussie Men’s Doubles deliver a ratings landslide for Nine

The 2022 Australian Open Women’s final and the Men’s Doubles final has proven to be a ratings blockbuster for broadcaster Nine.

On the second last night of the tournament the Ash Barty/Danielle Collins match drew a staggering 3,518,000 nationally (2,581,000 5CM; 936,000 regional), while the all-Australian Men’s Doubles final that saw Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis defeat Matt Ebden and Max Purcell delivered a monstrous 2,357,000 viewers nationally (1,725,000 5CM; 632,000 regional) after starting after 10pm AEDT.

Ash Barty’s victory was the highest ratings Australian Open Women’s final in OzTAM history.

The post-match presentation to Barty, with the surprise inclusion of former winner Evonne Goolagong Cawley, delivered even higher figures to land 3,982,000 (2,838,000 5CM; 1,144,000 regional) viewers nationally.

Overall, it delivered Nine a whopping 61.8% primary channel share 5CM which bumped up to 68.1% network share 5CM. In the primary channel race, Seven landed second with 9%, ABC third with 6.9%, SBS fourth with 2.4%, and 10 pulling up fifth with a meagre 2.2%.

The build up from the Women’s final pre-match also delivered big numbers, with 1,508,000 viewers nationally (), taunting rival Seven by starting at 6:30pm while its Saturday bulletin was mid-stream while it drew 1,186,000 viewers nationally (808,000 5CM; 378,000 regional). By comparison, Nine’s half-hour News landed 1,251,000 viewers nationally (891,000 5CM; 360,000 regional).

It’s been a massive fortnight for Nine as host broadcaster of the 2022 Australian Open, with ratings building into the second week as Australians continued to win. The broadcast completes today with the Women’s Doubles final at 2pm AEDT, and Rafael Nadal v Daniil Medvedev in the Men’s final at 6:30pm AEDT.
