MOST POPULAR INTERNATIONAL COMEDY PROGRAM FINALISTS

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (SBS)

The NBC comedy that is aired in Australia via SBS, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a single-camera comedy focus on a New York City police department in Brooklyn’s 99th precinct.

Starring Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz and Terry Crews, the show has been critically acclaimed over its eight season run, winning 15 awards from over 80 nominations.

When Brooklyn Nine-Nine wrapped earlier this year, Samberg said, “it got really emotionally rough because we all realized it was truly ending, and we all love each other and have been spending all that time together for eight years”.

SBS has been the home of the show since it began in 2014, and a win in International Comedy would be a great nod to the public broadcaster.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT (Binge)

Starring Kaley Cuoco as flight attendant Cassie Bowden, The Flight Attendant follows a hungover Bowden as she discovers a dead body of a passenger on her last flight. Afraid to call the police, she cleans up the crime and wonders just who the killer could be.

Despite its thrilling storyline, the show’s dark humour makes for an entirely worthy nomination in the International Comedy category.

With only eight episodes aired in its first season, the show has clocked up numerous award nominations, for which two have been won.

Picked up for another season, Binge is the home of this HBO Max original, and could take home the gold on November 28.

TED LASSO (Apple TV+)

This Apple TV+ original has been widely acclaimed for its hilarious comedic timing and truly funny cast, including Jason Sudeikis who plays the titular Ted Lasso.

The series follows Lasso, an American college football coach who is hired to coach an English soccer team in an attempt by its owner to spite her ex-husband. Despite completely no experience in the sport, Lasso’s got a charming optimism and folksy demeanor that brings back week after week.

Ted Lasso sweeped at the Emmy Awards this year, winning in Comedy Series, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. It has also received 20 other award wins.

With this as Apple TV+’s only nomination at the TV Boxies, it’ll certainly be a tough nominee to beat.

HACKS (Stan)

Another HBO Max original that’s found it’s way to Stan this time, Hacks follows the duo of a legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedy diva needing to maintain relevance and a Millennial comedy writer who is unable to find work due to being “cancelled” over an insensitive tweet.

Starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, the show’s first season was adored by critics and fans alike, scoring a 100% rating on review site, Rotten Tomatoes.

With seven award wins so far, Hacks has already been renewed for another season, promising fans more hilarious fun and hijinks in this half-hour show.

While up against some stiff competition, this nomination for Stan may just be the worthy winner at the TV Boxies.

FRIENDS: THE REUNION (Binge)

With fans clamoring for a reunion for over 20 years, Friends: The Reunion brought back the entire cast and creators of this globally-popular sitcom from the 90s.

In a one-night-only event, the six original Friends stars played in games, talked in interviews, reminisced of the recreated apartments set, and read some iconic scripts to fulfil the nostalgia and warmth of a show that’s never really died from the public scene.

The reunion special was picked up by Binge and screened live at the time of release on Foxtel, giving Australian fans the chance to reunite with their favourite characters one last time.

Unlike the aforementioned nominations, Friends: The Reunion is a one-off comedy special competing against full length television series. A win for Binge here would be a welcome and deserved outcome.
