It was an emotional night in newsrooms of Nine last night with the network broadcasting regional news into the markets of Victoria, Queensland and Southern NSW for the final time.

Samantha Heathwood (Qld), Natassia Soper (NSW) and Jo Hall (VIC) delivered their goodbyes to viewers last night. The three news services concluded with tributes to the large number of journalists and crews involved with the production over the last 4 years.

From tonight, (Wednesday) viewers in these markets will receive a new state-based version of WIN News at 5:30pm.

The closure of Nine’s regional bulletins combined with the axing of local WIN bulletins in 9 regional markets across Victoria and Queensland has led to significant job losses across rural Australia.

Nine News Regional launched in 2017 as part of the networks affiliation agreement with Southern Cross Stereo (SCA)

It was originally broadcast into 15 television sub-markets, with 1-hour local bulletins airing at 6pm. At its peak it employed 110 staff across the eastern states of the country.

Nine News Regional was first pulled off the air in March 2020 with Nine highlighting a need to consolidate resources due to fears of staff availability due to COVID-19.

A streamlined version of the news service, renamed as Nine News Local returned to the airwave in August 2020 when the network commenced producing state-based bulletins airing at the 5:30pm.

  1. Fascinating to see the different closers back to back. Heathwood clearly the most invested (Jo Hall sounds like she had a dinner to get to) but let down by a very “by the numbers” highlights reel blandly set to the news theme.
