FIRE FIGHT

Australia continues to endure a long, hot and tragic summer. Extreme conditions have contributed to extreme disasters. The worst, of course, has been the bushfires burning all over the country, many of which are still active. Despite the heroic efforts of thousands of brave men and women, lives have been lost and enormous amounts of property destroyed. Understandably, “Why?” is the first thing people want to know. “Can we stop it happening again?” is the next. In the premiere story of the 42nd season of 60 MINUTES, Tara Brown speaks with highly respected fire, climate and political experts to answer the fundamental questions Australians need answered.

WINDSORS AND LOSERS

It’s not quite disintegrating, but there’s little doubt the Royal Family is fraying at the edges. Bad enough is Prince Andrew being entangled in an ongoing sex scandal involving young women, but even more gob-smacking is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daring – many say disrespectful – escape from the Firm. As Tom Steinfort reports from London, the shame of it is the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had promised so much in the way of positive PR for the Royals. Sticking to the fairytale script, they’d fallen in love, married in a castle, and produced a beautiful boy. But somehow it’s now all gone horribly askew.

  1. We have always had extreme weather in Australia… I want to know what nasa is doing in space… whoever controls the weather controls humanity… climate change has been here long before us.. and will continue long after us..

  2. Tara what about Hazard Reduction was not mention at all, talk to farmers and fire fighters they will tell you the same, some areas in NSW and Vic have not had hazard reduction done in 40 years come on 60min it’s not all about climate change

  3. I actually was hoping for a tad of balanced reporting…won’t bother watching the rest of the show. P. s. Not all of the population is brainwashed yet !!!

  4. Barnaby says a great deal of the government’s stand on climate change is financial and mentions coal revenue. Maybe if the greedy politicians didn’t pay themselves so much we wouldn’t be so reliant on this revenue. They give themselves tens of thousands of dollars more each year yet other sectors have to fight for a mere 4% pay rise that is rarely approved without industrial action, and then subsequently made in staggered payments over many years.
This government is a joke, for the way it has remained stagnant and defiant on climate change as well as its capitolist agenda.
Can’t wait for Scott Morrison to get the boot.

  5. At the end of the day Climate change is happening, Man made ( 99.99 % confirmed by scientists we have caused the problem by speeding it up ) or Natural. We now need to manage it Globally. Extreme weather, heat, melting ice caps, rising sea levels, coral reefs dying, droughts, dead zones in the oceans, the list is endless. We are in trouble make no mistake about this………..

  6. Tara, you’re report was really good. Michael Mann, the Climatologists doses not have the right to come over to Australia and tell us to stop mining coal when America has twice as many coal mines then Australia, USA, 879 mines OZ, 410 mines and America is not doing anything about climate change.
Michael Mann should go home and get his own house in order.
