THE SHARK WHISPERER

Here’s an obscure fact: we are five times more likely to die taking a bath than being eaten by a shark. Attacks are incredibly rare, yet we still call sharks man-eaters. The simple truth is most people are petrified of them. Why? Maybe it’s because when they do strike humans, it’s violent, messy and guaranteed to generate big headlines. With summer almost here, sharks will once again be swimming their way to the surface of our thoughts, but according to Ocean Ramsey, being frightened of them is a waste of time and energy. Ocean is an incredible woman who has made it her life’s work to calm our fears about the threat of sharks, and she’s so convincing she even persuaded Karl Stefanovic to go swimming with a four-metre Galapagos shark in Hawaii.

FIGHT OF HIS LIFE

One moment everyone was having fun, the next a violent all-in brawl erupted. It was a late-night party in suburban Melbourne in 2005, and when the fighting ended a 22-year-old man was dead and an 18-year-old, up-and-coming Australian boxer was accused of murder. Straight away Khalid Baker protested his innocence, claiming he wasn’t near Albert Snowball when the young man was killed. And he had a crucial piece of evidence to support his version of events. What’s more, another male came forward and claimed he felt responsible for Albert Snowball’s death. At court the case got even stranger. The teenager who says he did it was acquitted, while Khalid was found guilty and jailed. Thirteen years later he’s served his sentence, but as Allison Langdon reports, this boxer’s fight for the truth continues.
