Eddie McGuire has today announced the AFL Footy Show is not quite dead yet with the show scheduled to return for one night only with its traditional Grand Final Week Spectacular.

The Grand Final Footy Show will return to Rod Laver Arena this year with host Eddie McGuire set to be joined by the always controversial Sam Newman, and the shows original ‘funny-man’, Trevor Marmalade.

The show promises to be a celebration of the AFL, and look back on the hilarious, ground-breaking and touching moments of The Footy Show’s quarter of a century as a TV institution.

The Grand Final Footy Show will also feature the “show-stopping” Player Revue

McGuire confirmed the special telling News Corp;

“For one night only we’re putting the band back together again” “It’s going to be great fun and an old-fashioned Footy Show. We said we’d do a couple of specials during the year. There’s been the World Cup of cricket and the Ashes coming up on Nine, so we’re just going to put all our resources into doing the big one.”

NINE had initially planned two Footy Show specials, with the My Room Telethon planned for the first week of the finals. A spokesperson for NINE telling TV Blackbox today, the charity Telethon will still take place later this year, TV Blackbox understands the event will not be presented under the Footy Show banner.

While the AFL Footy Show struggled in the ratings throughout 2018, last year’s Grand Final special did manage to narrowly defeat SEVEN’s rival program The Front Bar in the ratings.

NINE made the decision to axe a rebooted version of the Footy Show hosted by Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehman and Neroli Meadows earlier this year after disappointing ratings.

The Grand Final Footy Show spectacular – Thursday, September 26, at 7.30pm on Nine and 9Now.

Tickets to The Grand Final Footy Show will on sale in August via Ticketek.
