Sharp new “buddy cop” drama DEAD LUCKY

A gripping thriller which twists and turns at a frenetic pace through the streets of Sydney, DEAD LUCKY, SBS’s new four-part crime drama, begins Wednesday July 25, 9.30pm on SBS.

Emmy™ and Oscar nominated Australian actress Rachel Griffiths (Muriel’s Wedding, Six Feet Under, Brothers & Sisters, Hilary and Jackie) stars as stubborn but brilliant Detective Grace Gibbs, obsessed with avenging the murder of her junior officer.

Chinese-born New Zealand actor Yoson An, who was recently cast as the romantic lead in Disney’s live-action Mulan, co-stars as Charlie Fung, a new trainee detective who blames his supervising officer Grace for the death of his best friend.

2017 Heath Ledger Scholarship recipient Mojean Aria (Danger Close, The Bronx Bull) plays Mani, an off-the-books worker at an inner-city convenience store, run by greedy owners. Mani is a young Iranian medical student who is part of a crowded share house of international students. 

After arriving in Sydney with the promises of an idyllic new life in the seductive harbour city, these students begin to struggle under the weight of exploitation and cultural pressures from home, and find themselves in dangerous circumstances as they try to keep their dreams alive. 

When a violent fugitive holds up the convenience store, Grace and Charlie are called in to investigate, setting off a chain of events with devastating consequences.

The stellar line up of Australian actors in Dead Lucky includes Matt Nable (Jasper Jones, Barracuda), Justine Clarke (Hoges, Red Dog: True Blue),  Simon Burke (Devil’s Playground), Brooke Satchwell (Jack Irish, Wonderland), Ian Meadows (The Wrong Girl, The Moodys) and Rhys Muldoon (Fighting Season, House Husbands).

Also starring are Lincoln Younes (Grand Hotel, Down Under)Anna Samson (Wake In Fright – The Television Series), Aldo Mignone (A Place To Call Home), Sara West (Don’t Tell, Peter Allen: The Boy Next Door), Xana Tang (MulanThe Letdown), Annie Maynard (Upper Middle Bogan, Paper Giants), Sarah Thamin (Hyde & Seek) and Tessa de Josselin (Holding The Man).

SBS Director of TV and Online Content Marshall Heald said, “DEAD LUCKY tackles important social themes in the unique way SBS is famous for.

“This is an absorbing drama that pulls audiences into rich and complex character relationships, and then surprises by opening the lens even further to explore the rarely talked-about challenges that new migrants to Australia can sometimes be faced with as they try to build a new life in our beautiful country.

“It is fantastic to have a diverse cast of local actors to bring this story to life.”

DEAD LUCKY is created and written by Subtext Pictures’ Ellie Beaumont and Drew Proffitt for SBS with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Create NSW. DRG is handing international distribution, and the series has been already acquired overseas by Sundance Now, AMC Networks’ premium SVOD service.

 

Four-part series DEAD LUCKY premieres Wednesday 25 July, 9.30pm on SBS and is also available on SBS On Demand.
