Your favourite Nordic warriors are back and ready to wage war in the newest season of top-rated drama Vikings.

SBS exclusively premieres season five of Vikings in Australia on Wednesday 6 December at 9.30pm with a double episode. Weekly episodes will then air every Wednesday at 9.30pm, and will also be available for catch-up following broadcast on SBS On Demand.

SBS Channel Manager, Ben Nguyen, said: “For years, SBS has brought Australian viewers the momentous, historically-inspired adventures of Vikings, and we’re thrilled to yet again be the first to bring the new season of Vikings to Australia for all fans to enjoy.”

Season 5A stars series favourites Katheryn Winnick as Queen Lagertha, Gustaf Skarsgård as Floki, Alex Høgh Andersen as Ivar the Boneless, Alexander Ludwig as Bjorn, Australian actor Jordan Smith as Ubbe, Marco Ilso as Hvitserk – and marks the return of Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), who joined in season 4B as Bishop Heahmund.

This season begins with Ivar the Boneless asserting his leadership over the Great Heathen Army, while Lagertha reigns as Queen of Kattegat. Ivar’s murder of his brother Sigurd sets the stage for vicious battles to come as Ragnar’s sons plot their next moves after avenging their father’s death. Bjorn follows his destiny into the Mediterranean Sea and Floki who is suffering from the loss of his wife Helga, takes to the seas submitting himself to the will of the Gods. This season is full of startling alliances and unbelievable betrayals as the Vikings fight to rule the world.

Vikings is the critically acclaimed series from creator and writer Michael Hirst (Academy-Award winning Elizabeth, Emmy, Golden Globe nominated The Tudors)and has been a huge international triumph, remaining a top-ten cable scripted drama in the U.S.

Hirst serves as executive producer along with Morgan O’Sullivan of World 2000 (The Count of Monte Cristo, The Tudors), Sheila Hockin (The Tudors, The Borgias), John Weber of Take 5 Productions (The Tudors, The Borgias), Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, and James Flynn (The Tudors, The Borgias).

Vikings is an international Irish/Canadian co-production by World 2000 and Take 5 Productions. MGM Television brings the series to the global audience, serving as the worldwide distributor outside of Ireland and Canada. Vikings is produced in association with Corus Entertainment.

Vikings was recently renewed with a 20-episode sixth season which will air on SBS in 2018. Series regular Katheryn Winnick is set to direct one episode in season six, marking her directorial debut.

SBS has exclusively premiered all seasons of Vikings since its Australian debut in 2013.
