The launch of the Nine Networks new 1-hour regional news service in Canberra is off to a slow start with the bulletin finishing third in its timeslot.

Former ABC Breakfast weather presenter Vanessa O’Hanlon presents Nine’s Canberra bulletin from a studio in Sydney. The launch was the first of 15 additional 1-hour news bulletins designed to serve regional communities in Victoria, Southern NSW and Queensland.

Nine’s news offering, which blends local news with national and international stories, debuted with just 11,355 viewers, which is an 18.8% commercial share in the 6pm to 6.30pm timeslot. Seven News on Prime7 reached 16,601 viewers and WIN News Canberra averaged 22,910 viewers.

The figure of 11,355 was down compared to the average audience viewing figure for Nine in Canberra of 14,809 over the past two weeks.

Between 6:30pm and 7pm, the debut audience for Nine’s Canberra bulletin increased to 15,270 viewers, but remained behind WIN’s The Project with 19,799 viewers, and Seven News on Prime7 with 20,211 viewers.

Nine however is unconcerned by the soft launch figures,a spokesperson for the network telling DeciderTV, The numbers are so small in regional areas, that they do jump around a bit. You can’t really draw any conclusions until after a period of weeks, or months.”

The Nine Network will launch its next regional bulletin in the Illawarra on Monday the 13th February and will continue to role out bulletins throughout Southern NSW, Victoria and Queensland throughout 2017.
